Cardinal Women Take Road Win Against Le Moyne

Box Score SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team secured their second straight win on Tuesday with a defensively solid 70-61 victory over fellow Jesuit Institution, Le Moyne College.

Taneka Lewis led all scorers with a game-high 20 points, followed close behind by Mountain East Conference Player of the Week Breanna Butler who added 17.

The Cardinals improve their record to 3-5 over all and are riding a two game win streak into the holiday break.

"I thought we had a very good overall team effort again tonight," said WJU head Coach Debbie Buff. "This is a big win for us. We're starting to build some team chemistry. I'm really happy for the team, they have worked hard after exams and deserved this win."

The Cardinals weren't getting the shots they were looking for in the first half, trailing Le Moyne 27-25 at the break. Butler went into the half with only 3 points on 18 minutes.

WJU poured on the points in the 2nd half, shooting 54% from the field and going 3-6 on three pointers on the half too.

Defensively, Coach Buff's team held the highly regarded Dolphins to 29% on field goals in the game, and 0-12 on 3-pointers in the second half.

"I told the girls that if we hold teams to under 65 points, we're going to win some games," added Buff. "I thought we defended well in the 2-3, and were able to get to the rim in the second half to open up some shots from the outside."

The Cardinals had some help from their bench on the night as well with Kelsey Pacholke and Alex Anderson each putting in eight points.

WJU will now take their holiday break, and be back in action on January 5th when they face the University of Virginia Wise at home. The tipoff for that match is scheduled for 1pm.
