Box Score 2 CHICAGO, Ill. – The Wheeling Jesuit Volleyball team isn't accustomed to losing, but on Saturday the #22 Cardinals' 23-game winning streak came to an end with two losses in a row.
WJU traveled to Lewis University for a double header against Rockhurst University (Kansas City, MO) and the home team Lewis Flyers, and came away on the losing end of a 3-1 decision in both games.
The non-conference losses put WJU at 24-5 on the season, but they remain perfect in Mountain East Conference play at 11-0.
"Rockhurst and Lewis are great programs and played us well," said WJU coach
Christy Benner. "We're all disappointed in our play but we'll move on and learn from those matches."
Against Rockhurst, the Cardinals dropped the first two sets (22-25, 15-25) before claiming a victory in set three, 25-21. WJU eventually dropped set four 25-17 to fall 3-1 to the Hawks.
Despite the loss, WJU senior
Jenna Pew (Marshallville, Ohio) was outstanding for the Cardinals, tallying a triple-double with 13 kills, 26 assists and 11 digs. Freshman
Kayce Krucki (Findlay, Ohio) was also strong for WJU hitting 10 kills and coming up with 11 digs.
The Cardinal attack was also bolstered by freshman
Emma Schleucher (Findlay, Ohio) who let the Cardinals with 17 kills.
Following the loss to Rockhurst, the Cardinals tried to regroup against the home-team Lewis Flyers, but came away with similar results, again losing 1-3. WJU pushed Lewis into extras in the first set before eventually falling 27-25. The Cardinals won the second set in another close battle 25-22, but dropped the next two sets 26-24 and 25,13.
Jenna Pew was again excellent, racking up another triple-double, this time with better numbers. Pew tallied 17 kills, 19 assists and 11 more digs to pace the Cardinals. Krucki and Schleucher were also productive again for the Cards, with Krucki totaling 11 kills and 17 digs, and Schleucher taking 11 kills and 10 digs. Number 8
Madison Strall spread the attack with 28 assists.
The Cardinals will face cross-town rivals West Liberty up on the hill this coming Tuesday, 11/5 at 7pm in a Mountain East matchup.
