Wheeling, W. Va. - The spring academic award schedule started off strong for the Wheeling University Athletic Department, with 105 student-athletes earning Academic All-Conference honors. The second half of the awards released this week with the announcement of the Commissioner's Honor Roll, and the Cardinals continued their momentum, finishing top five in the conference in honorees. Wheeling would finish with 59 student-athletes on the Commissioner's Honor Roll, seeing an increase of five student-athletes from last spring.
In order to qualify for the MEC Commissioner's Honor Roll, a student-athlete must have a Grade Point Average of 3.25 and 3.69 during the championship season of their sport. The student-athlete must be a member of the active roster to qualify in one of the MEC's 13 winter/spring sponsored sports. Across the Cardinal's 11 member institutions, 648 student-athletes earned the Commissioner's Honor Roll distinction, bringing the total to 1,610 students who earned spring/winter academic honors. Leading the list of Commissioner's Honor Roll honorees was Frostburg State, who had 87 honorees on this year's list. They were followed by The University of Charleston (79) and a tie between Glenville State and West Liberty at 60. The Cardinals finished in a tie for fifth in the conference with 59 honorees.
Leading the way for the Cardinal's 11 winter/spring sports was the Wheeling Baseball team, who finished with 12 student-athletes on the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Acrobatics & Tumbling was the other team to reach double digit honorees, finishing with 10, while Men's Swimming finished with nine honorees. Rounding out the list of winter/spring sports honorees was Women's Lacrosse (7), Softball (6), Men's Basketball (4), Men's Track & Field (3), Women's Swimming (3), Women's Track & Field (2), and Wrestling (1).
