Cardinals Land 105 on Spring MEC Academic All-Conference List

Wheeling, W. Va. - With the spring semester wrapped up, the Mountain East Conference (MEC) handed out their annual academic honors for the winter and spring sports seasons. The Cardinals had a lot of success on the field, with 10 of the 11 spring/winter sports programs either qualifying for their conference tournament or competing in their conference championship event, and that success continued into the classroom. The Cardinals would place 105 student-athletes on the MEC Academic All-Conference list, besting last season's number by three student-athletes.

In order to qualify for the Academic All-Conference list, a student-athlete must earn a Grade Point Average between 3.70 and 4.00 during their team's championship season. The student must be an active member of their team's roster to qualify in one of the conference's 13 spring/winter sports. In total across the conference's 11 member institutions, 962 athletes earned the distinction of Academic All-MEC. Wheeling ranked third among it's conference opponents in students who earned the honor, with Frostburg State taking the top spot with 127 student-athletes. The University of Charleston would finish with 109 honorees, with the Cardinals rounding out the top three at 105 award winners.

Leading the way for the Wheeling winter/spring sports Academic All-Conference teams was Wheeling Baseball, who had 19 make the list. Four programs would have double-digit honorees on this year's list, with Women's Basketball finishing second in the department with 14 honorees. Women's Lacrosse (12) and Softball (11) would round out the double digit honorees, with those four teams leading the charge in the classroom. The rest of the list included Men's Track & Field (9), Women's Swimming (9), Acrobatics & Tumbling (8), Wrestling (7), Men's Basketball (6), Men's Swimming (5), and Women's Track & Field (5).The complete list of students who earned Academic All-Conference is below:
