Wheeling, W. Va. - After competing across 21 of the 23 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Championship sponsored sports, it was a big year for Wheeling University Athletics. 16 of those teams qualified for their respective MEC postseason tournaments, while two programs won their respective regular season championships. On Thursday, the MEC released their annual Commissioner's Cup Standings, encapsulating the entire year of athletic competition, and the Cardinals would finish ninth with 89.0 points.
The Commissioner's Cup standings are compiled using an "all-sports rating." This rating is determined by a formula that awards points to a school for its regular season finish equal to the number of teams per sport sponsored by the MEC, and then divided by the number of sports offered by the institution. The final rating is a percentage of points acquired against the number of points available (average percentile finish in the standings of each sport sponsored by an institution). A bonus point is given for winning the conference tournament in applicable sports. Wheeling offers 21 of the 23 sports sponsored by the MEC, meaning each sport's points are determined by their finish in the standings, divided by 21 points.
After finishing 11th last season, the Cardinals would jump two spots in this year's standings finishing ninth overall with 89.0 total points and an "all-sport rating" of 0.4472361809. Their 89.0 total points was a 14 point increase from the year prior, and they saw their all-sport rating raise by 0.0665254809 from the 2024-2025 season. With 21 total MEC-sponsored sports at Wheeling University, the Cardinals scored 89.0 out of a total od 199 possible points, giving them their all-sport rating. Leading the way for the department was a pair of regular season champions in Wheeling Baseball and Volleyball. Volleyball would clinch the first regular season championship, winning the MEC North Division and earning 7.0 points. However, the biggest point scorer for the Cardinals was Wheeling Baseball, who opened May with a share of the MEC North Division title. They would end up taking home 7.0 points as well to round out the season.
Leading the way for the conference in 2025-2026 was the University of Charleston, who scored a total of 182.0 points and had an "all-Sport rating" of 0.9784946237. The Golden Eagles take home the Commissioner's cup for the eighth straight season, dating back to the 2017-18 season. They were followed by Glenville State, who finished with 116.0 total points and an "all-sport rating" of 0.6705202312, and Frostburg State, who finished with 125.0 total points and an "all-sport rating" of 0.6443298969. Wheeling last won the MEC Commissioner's Cup during the 2014-2015 season, and are one of three different departments to take home the honor.
