Baseball/Softball Sweep Mid-April Cardinal High Flyer of the Week Honors

Wheeling, W. Va. - As the Wheeling University Athletic season reached mid-April, the final playoff push begins for the spring sports teams competing for their respective titles. On Wednesday, the department announced their weekly Cardinal High Flyer of the Week awards, and it was a pair of efforts on the diamond that took home the honors. Wheeling Softball player Keke Warrix was named the Female High Flyer of the Week, while Baseball player Mason Fenwick earned the Male High Flyer of the Week honor to round out the awards.

It was a busy week of Cardinal athletics, with Wheeling Women's Golf starting things out at the 2026 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Spring Classic. The Cardinals would finish with a pair of All-MEC honorees, and finished fourth in the field to round out the regular season. Men's Golf was up next, beginning their regional run at the IUP Invitational, and they would take ninth out of the 13 teams in the field, putting up a score of 617 across two rounds. Wheeling Baseball would also be in regional play, leading CAL-U 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth before dropping a 6-5 game in walk-off fashion. Wednesday was all about Lacrosse with Men's Lacrosse playing at Bishop Schmitt Field and Women's Lacrosse traveling to Frostburg State. The men pulled off a 13-6 senior day win over Malone, while the women fell 21-7 on the road to Frostburg State.

With storms scheduled for Saturday, the weekend got started a day early, with four teams in action on Friday. Track & Field kicked things off at the Otterbein Twilight, with Wheeling putting together several PR performances in their final tune-up. Baseball would open a four-game set against Fairmont State led by offense, winning 15-0 and 8-0, while Softball dropped a road doubleheader to Davis & Elkins by scores of 9-7 and 6-5. Men's Lacrosse would wrap up the day with a road battle against Walsh, falling 15-6 against the Cavaliers. Sunday would see Softball wrap up their weekend with a trip to Buckhannon, West Virginia, falling to West Virginia Wesleyan by scores of 9-8 and 2-1. The weekend rounded out with the final two games of the Fairmont State series, with Wheeling Baseball falling 6-4 in game one before taking game two 14-7.

For Keke Warrix, she is earning her first Cardinal High Flyer of the Week award of the season, after being a spark plug at the top of the Cardinal lineup. She would play time in all four games for the Cardinals during the weekend, finishing 6-14 (.429) with a double and two runs scored across the weekend. Included in the effort were a pair of three-hit efforts, with her best performance coming in the opener of the weekend. She would go 3-4 in game one against Davis & Elkins, scoring two of the Cardinal's seven runs in what turned out to be a 9-7 loss. She wrapped up the weekend strong in the final game against West Virginia Wesleyan, going 3-4 with her lone extra base hit of the weekend. The effort helped raise her batting average for the season to .330, sitting second on the team behind Mackenzie Burns's .381 mark. She looks to continue to be a spark plug as the Cardinals try and battle for an MEC Tournament spot.

Mason Fenwick is also taking home his first Cardinal High Flyer of the Week award of the season, after putting up a career-best performance against Fairmont State. The senior made his third start of the season in game two of the series, throwing 6.1 innings allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out four in the team's 8-0 win. He allowed his first hit of the game in the bottom of the second, and allowed just three Falcons to reach base over the first six innings. He came out for the top of the seventh, walking the lead-off batter and getting the first out on a fielder's choice before handing the ball to the bullpen. The 6.1 innings were a career-high for the senior, while he set his new season-high with four strikeouts in the game. Fenwick was able to bounce back after giving up four runs against Frostburg State, and looks to continue to be a strong piece for both the rotation and the bullpen.

With the announcement of this week's winners, Warrix takes home the first Cardinal High Flyer of the Week award for the Wheeling Softball team, while Fenwick is the fourth baseball player to take home the honors. Fenwick joins teammates Edward Mateo, Brock Elliott, and Gavin Millians in winning the honors, while Warrix sets the bar for the Cardinal Softball team. Last week, the Cardinals honored Women's Track & Field athlete Autumn Kerchner and Men's Lacrosse player Riley Lincoln as the High Flyers of the Week.

The next Wheeling University Athletic event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 15th, when the Wheeling Softball team battles West Liberty with first pitch at 4 PM.
