Wheeling, W. Va. - It has been a long battle back from injury, but Wheeling University Baseball player Sebastian Khan has grown into one of the best pitchers in program history. The 2026 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Pitcher of the Year went from back-end bullpen to ace starter over the course of three seasons, and is now ready to take his game to the next level. Khan has signed a professional contract with the Quebec Capitales of the Frontier League, beginning his career in professional baseball.
"It truly means a lot to me, after suffering an injury that sidelined me for more than four months in the fall of my Junior year, I was determined to get back to the game and come back even stronger – and this past season is proof of that," said Khan. "Becoming the first person in my family to sign a professional contract to play any sport is something I'll never take for granted. I'm just beyond grateful for the opportunity to continue to play the game I love. I have the Lord, my family, my girlfriend, my coaches, and my teammates to thank for their unwavering support through both the challenging moments and the successful ones. I truly couldn't have done it without them."
Khan is coming off a career year during his senior season, culminating in the MEC Pitcher of the Year honor. He was the first Cardinal to ever win the MEC's top pitching honor, and the first conference pitcher of the year award winner since Noah Mull accomplished the feat in 2010 in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). Khan would put together a 9-2 record and a 2.67 ERA across 84.1 innings of work while walking 25 and striking out 87. He would lead the team with four complete games during the season, and was part of program history starting the team's first no-hitter, combining with teammates Luke Walter and Chris Sauer to complete the feat against West Liberty on May 2nd. He would take home First Team All-MEC honors, the second All-Conference honor of his career. He rounded out the award season by earning First Team All-Region honors from both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA), while also earning Third Team All-American Honors.
With his senior season effort, Khan broke several single-season records during the season, setting the top mark in pitching wins (9), innings pitched (84.1), and strikeouts (87). Over his three seasons with the Cardinals, Khan has posted a 10-8 record with a 3.32 ERA across 146.0 innings of work. He finds his name all over the Cardinal career record books, posting the second lowest career ERA in program history (3.32), the third most strikeouts (160), the third most wins (10), and the fifth most innings pitched (146.0) across his three seasons on the mound. He was named the Wheeling University Male Athlete of the Year, given annually to the graduating male student-athlete with the most decorated career, rounding out his time with the Cardinals.
Khan and the Quebec Capitales play game two of a three-game series against the Sussex County Miners tonight with first pitch at 7:05 PM.
