Wheeling, W. Va. - After their trip to Walsh University, the Wheeling Men's Lacrosse team (6-6, 5-4) officially clinched their spot for the Great-Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Tournament despite falling 15-6 to the Cavaliers. The Cardinals will be traveling to Elkins, WV tomorrow for their final regular season gain against Davis & Elkins.
Wheeling got the night started in North Canton with Jack Rowe scoring the first goal of the game. Walsh was able to score the next goal right off the faceoff, but Andrew Turner helped Rowe find the back of the net to end the first quarter 2-1. The Cavaliers were able to take the lead in the second quarter by scoring three goals back-to-back. The Cardinals kept the game close with two of their own goals to go into half time down by one. Walsh came out of the half hot and ready to increase their lead to five. Wheeling was able to get two more goals during the third quarter, but Walsh would keep them scoreless during the fourth quarter. The Cardinals fell to the Cavaliers 15-6, but due to the loss during the Thomas More vs. Point Park game, Wheeling was able to clinch a spot in the G-MAC Tournament for the third year in a row.
Jack Rowe currently sits ninth in the G-MAC for goals and points with 31 goals and 43 points. Landen Martin currently sits fourth with an overall save percentage of .578, sixth for saves (137) with an average of 13.70 saves per game, and tenth for ground balls (44) with an average of 4.40 per game. Lastly, Riley Lincoln sits second for caused turnovers (240) with an average of 2 caused turnovers per game.
The Matchup
Wheeling and Davis & Elkins will be meeting for the 11th time. Wheeling has come out on top the last four meetings, beating the Senators 23-6 last year. Eight different Cardinals were able to score during the game last year, with Jake Rowe scoring 10 goals throughout the game.
Davis & Elkins are currently 0-9 in conference. Their last game was against Northwood and they fell 28-7. Five Senators were able to score throughout the day, with two scoring two. Redshirt junior attacker Devon Garcia and senior attacker Charlie Taylor led the offence with two goals each. Freshman goalkeeper Jacob Orr led the defence with five ground balls and made 13 saves on 36 shots. Freshman Kade Melton was their lead faceoff man going 11-32.
