Wheeling, W. Va. - Heading into the 2026 season, the Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team went through a lot of turnover on the field after graduating nine a season ago. The Cardinals were able to continue their winning tradition on the field, and that success also translated into the classroom. Wheeling would place 15 student-athletes on the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Academic All-Conference List, setting a program record for success in the classroom.
In order to be eligible for the G-MAC Academic All-Conference list, the student-athlete must play a varsity sport recognized by the conference and have a minimum grade point average of 3.30. The Cardinals have been an associate member of the G-MAC in Lacrosse since the 2018 season and have had double digit honorees in each of the past three seasons. However, 2026 represents a high-water mark for the program, with 15 players earning spots on the list. It is an increase of three student-athletes from a season ago and is one more than the previous record of 14, set back during the 2023 season. As a team, the Cardinals put together a team GPA of 3.33, marking the highest GPA for the team over the past several seasons.
Leading the way for the Cardinals on the Academic list were a pair of seniors in Gage Kimmel and Domenico Cataldo. The duo have been members of the G-MAC Academic All-Conference team in each of their four seasons with the Cardinals, and helped set the standard for academic excellence. The youth movement also made their presence felt on this year's list, with eight of the Cardinal's 15 honorees being a part of the team's freshman class.
