Baseball Wraps up Season Series with CAL-U Looking to Build Atlantic Region Momentum

Wheeling, W. Va. - After starting Mountain East Conference (MEC) North Division play with a bang, the Wheeling University Baseball team (27-9, 13-3) looks to keep their momentum going in the Atlantic Region into their midweek match-up. The Cardinals will once again travel to EQT Park in Washington, Pennsylvania, this time as the road team, when they wrap up their season series against California University of Pennsylvania, with first pitch at 1 PM. After picking up three big in-region wins over the weekend, the Cardinals look to continue to climb the regional ladder on their road to the team's first-ever NCAA Regional play-off appearance.

Over the weekend, the Cardinals welcomed in the other regionally ranked team to EQT Park when they battled Frostburg State in their divisional opener. It was a weekend ruled by pitching, with neither team scoring over four runs in a game, and it started right from game one. Frostburg State would score an early run, but the Cardinals battled back with four runs in the middle innings to pick up a 4-3 win to start the series. In game two, Frostburg State would once again take an early lead, but this time the Cardinals couldn't battle back as they fell 4-1 to split the day. As they entered day two, the strong pitching continued on both sides, but this time it was the Cardinals who scored first with three runs between the second and third innings. Frostburg State would get a pair in the top of the seventh, but Wheeling held on for the 3-2 win. Game four looked a lot like the first two, with Wheeling sitting behind until their final at-bats. They put up a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth and the Cardinals would win 3-1 to take the series.

Leading the day two sweep was redshirt freshman Luke Meyer, who rounded out a big weekend at the plate. Across the four-game set, Meyer would finish 6-13 (.461) with five RBI across the four-game set, with four of those RBI coming on the second day. In game one, he would open up the scoring with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the third, which would eventually go down as the game-winning hit. In game two, the big hit came in the bottom of the sixth when he came up with runners on first and second with two-out. He would end up lining an RBI double to center, bringing home both runners and leading the Cardinals to the 3-1 win. The effort raised his season batting average to .385, placing him second on the team, and moved him up to second with 29 RBI to complement his team-leading five home runs.

However, it was a weekend dominated by starting pitching, and the Cardinals got their best effort of the weekend in game three from Dom Carlson. Carlson worked his way around some traffic throughout the day, but held Frostburg State off the board through six innings. He was charged with two unearned runs in the top of the seventh, and rounded out his day throwing 6.1 allowing two unearned runs on four hits while walking one and striking out three. It lowered his season ERA to 3.18 and he looks to continue to build on that as he continues through divisional play. Wheeling's lone complete game effort came in the opener when Sebastian Khan took the mound. He would give up three runs through the first four innings, but shut things down when it mattered most. He would pick up his fourth complete game of the season, allowing three runs on four hits while walking three and tying his career-high with nine strikeouts.

The weekend win over Frostburg State was the fourth straight for the Cardinals, with the team sitting at 13-3 in conference play and 27-9 overall. They currently sit on top of the MEC North Division after the opening weekend, and are chasing a few milestones down the stretch. The Cardinals are just three wins away from setting the single-season win record, while they look to continue to climb the Atlantic Regional ladder. The Cardinals were ranked for the fourth week in a row in the weekly National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) and are looking to maintain their spot as one of the top teams in the region coming down the stretch. The final three weeks of the regular season will be a big test for Wheeling, as they fight for a divisional championship and a return to the MEC Baseball Championships.

The Match-up

The Cardinals and Vulcans are meeting for the 34th time in program history on Tuesday, and the second time during the 2026 season. CAL-U leads the all-time series at 30-3, including a 22-3 record when they are the home team against Wheeling. The Cardinals will be looking to break a 10-game losing streak at the hands of the Vulcans, but carry some momentum from a late offensive push in their first meeting of the season.

That meeting came back on March 31st, 2026, in a game that CAL-U would win 12-6 at EQT Park. Leading the way for the Cardinals off the bench was Jalen Raysor, who delivered with a pinch hit RBI double that would drive in three of his team's six runs. Luke Meyer added a 1-3 effort with an RBI and a run scored, while Logan Stalbird provided three scoreless innings in relief to keep the Cardinals in the game and give them a chance to win it late.
