Wheeling Men’s Lacrosse Secures First Win of the Season

Box Score

Sparks, MD. - The Wheeling Men's Lacrosse team (1-2, 0-1) secured their first win of the season, and third win against Holy Family University (HFU), with six straight goals in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals traveled to the USA Lacrosse Facility in Sparks, Maryland to take on the Tigers for the third year in a row. After losing their first two games, the Cardinals were looking for their first win and were able to find it.

Mason Malec got the day started with winning the first faceoff, which resulted in Langdon Gallagher getting the ball to Finn Wotton, allowing him to get the first goal of the game in the first 23 seconds. That was the only Cardinal goal of the first quarter, while HFU was able to score four. After they scored their fourth goal in the first, no goals were scored for the next 22 minutes until Andrew Turner was able to find Zach Brindenbaker to get Wheeling's second goal of the game with only 47 seconds left in the second quarter. They went into halftime 4-2 in favor of the Tigers.

Coming out of halftime, the Cardinals won the first faceoff, but the Tigers got the ball back and scored within the first minute. HFU was the only one to score in the third quarter, with two goals, to make the score 6-2 going into the fourth quarter. Wheeling got the gears rolling in the final quarter with six goals in a row, and four of them came from Jack Rowe. The Cardinals took the lead for the first time with five minutes left in the game. The Tigers took a couple more shots, but only got one to hit the net, allowing Wheeling to come out on top for the first time this season with a 8-7 victory.

Rowe led the attacking end with four goals, while Turner helped out with three assists. Malec led the defensive end with seven ground balls, while goalkeeper Landen Martin was able to make 11 saves on 18 shots in his first game of the season.

The Cardinals will be back in action next Saturday, March 14th, when they head up to Painesville, OH to take on Lake Erie College in their second Great Midwest Athletic Conference game of the season.
