Wheeling, W. Va. - The final week of Mountain East Conference (MEC) South crossover play has the Wheeling University Baseball team (17-6, 6-2) brings the Cardinals home to EQT Park for a pair of doubleheaders. After rain canceled their Saturday plans, the team will take on Glenville State Sunday at 1 PM, followed by Concord on Monday at 1 PM to start the new week. The Cardinals look to build on their momentum from their first weekend sweep in three seasons, as they look to keep climbing the conference and regional standings heading into April.
The Cardinals are riding high after a big weekend in Buckhannon and Elkins, West Virginia, as they battled West Virginia Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins. The first game of the weekend was the closest of the four games, with West Virginia Wesleyan holding a 3-2 lead heading to the top of the seventh. The Cardinal's offense would explode for four runs in the top of the seventh, securing a 7-3 win and carrying that momentum throughout the weekend. They would follow that up with an 8-4 game two win, sending them to Davis & Elkins with two wins under their belt. The offense continued to swing a hot bat as the doubleheader moved to Elkins, West Virginia, with the Cardinals scoring nine runs in the first three innings. They would go on to win 12-3, and rounded out the weekend with a 7-2 game two win to finish the four-game weekend sweep.
Leading the offensive explosion for the Cardinals was Gavin Millians, who was named the MEC Hitter of the Week for his performance on the road. Millians would finish the weekend 6-12 (.500) with 11 RBI and a run scored across the four games over the weekend. He would drive in at least two runs in each of the four games, with his biggest performance coming in the weekend opening game. He would finish 2-4 with four RBI against the Bobcats, including driving in a run in the four-run seventh inning. The effort helped raise Millians' season average to .350 across 60 at-bats, setting him third on the team entering the weekend. He is also the Cardinal's RBI leader, holding 23 through 19 games, and looks to continue coming through in the clutch for his team.
The other Conference Player of the Week award went to Sebastian Khan, who was named the MEC's pitcher of the Week. He continued his dominance on the mound, finishing his second complete game of the season. He would throw the opener against West Virginia Wesleyan, and went 7.0 innings allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits while walking one and stirking out nine. He tied his career-high for the third time this season with nine strikeouts, and walked one batter or fewer for the fifth time in his first seven starts of the season. Khan would lower his season ERA to 1.93, leading all starters in the MEC, while striking out a conference leading 46 batters. Following him was Brock Elliott in game two, who gave up his first earned run of the year, going 6.0 innings in the win. His ERA sits at 1.28 through nine appareances, three starts, as he looks to continue adding to that starting rotation.
As they head into their final crossover weekend, the Cardinals enter as a ranked team for the first time during the 2026 season. The Cardinals earned the #10 spot in the NCBWA Atlantic Regional Rankings, making the list for the first time since the 2024 season. The Cardinals had received votes in three of the last four weeks, but finally cracked the list after a weekend sweep. They were one of two MEC teams ranked on the list, joining Frostburg State, who earned the #6 seed in the regional field. The Cardinals currently hold the second best record in the conference entering play Saturday, sitting at 6-2, and are tied for the best overall record in the conference, matching Frostburg State's 17-6 mark. Wheeling will look to continue climbing the ladder as they try to return to the 2026 MEC Baseball Tournament in May.
