Wheeling, W. Va. - The Wheeling Men's Lacrosse team (3-3, 2-2) hosted #5 Seton Hill on Monday, March 23 and fell to them 17-3. This was the first time since 2018 where the Cardinals didn't allow the Griffins 20 goals or more. They will host Northwood University Thursday to continue their Great-Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) and four-game home stretch.
During their game against Seton Hill, sophomore goalkeeper Landen Martin helped contain them to only 17 goals, allowing 13, making 21 saves, and picking up five ground balls. The Cardinals defensive end was also able to slow Seton Hill's attacking end, causing them to make smart passes before going to goal. Jake Rowe, Ayden Shepard, and Zach Bridenbaker were able to get on the board for the Cardinals. Additionally, freshman faceoff man Hajiyianni Marin made his collegiate debut in the final quarter winning three of the five faceoffs.
The Matchup
Wheeling and Northwood will be meeting for the second time in G-MAC play, after losing to them last year 14-12. Six Cardinals—five being former players—were able to score on the day, including Rowe with one goal and three assists.
Northwood is currently 3-0 in the G-MAC after playing Malone University on Saturday; beating them 18-1 with 10 players scoring, and two getting a hat trick. Sophomore attacker Ryder Mulvey and freshman attacker Payton Allaire led the attacking end with three goals each. Mulvey also led defensively, alongside sophomore defender Bradley McDiarmid, with seven ground balls and McDiarmid with three caused turnovers. Their starting goalkeeper, freshman Easton Beukema, split time with junior goalkeeper Owen Brown, having a combined 13 saves on 14 shots, with Brown allowing one goal. Lastly, with three different faceoff men, Northwood went 14-23 in faceoffs.
