Wheeling, W. Va. - On a weekend that saw the Cardinal bats explode for 46 runs, it was the designated hitter spot that led the charge. The Mountain East Conference (MEC) released their weekly Player of the Week Awards, presented by The Healthplan, and the Cardinals were honored for the third time in the first four weeks. Redshirt freshman Luke Meyer was named the MEC's Hitter of the Week, serving as a catalyst at the top of the Cardinal's lineup.
Meyer would appear in all three games as the team's designated hitter, finishing the week 8-12 (.667) with a double, a triple, a home run, and six RBI during the week. He finished with at least two hits in each of the three games during the weekend, while accounting for 11 of the team's 46 runs across the weekend. The effort raised his season batting average to .452 across 42 at-bats, and he leads all eligible players in both batting average and on-base percentage (.589) during the season. Along with the ability to both get on base and drive in runs, Meyer was also able to unlock some of his power, hitting two of his three home runs this season during the weekend.
His biggest effort of the weekend would come in the series finale, when Meyer finished 4-5 with a home run, a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. The four hits were a season-high for the redshirt freshman, and all three RBI came at pivotal moments during the game. He would start the Wheeling scoring with an RBI single in the top of the first, and drew a bases loaded walk in the second to tie the game back up at 4-4. His final blow would come in the top of the seventh, when he lifted his third home run of the season that opened up the scoring to 11-6. Meyer is tied for the team lead with three home runs so far this season, while leading the team with 14 RBI from that designated hitter spot.
With Meyer taking home MEC Player of the Week honors, the Wheeling Athletic Department has now had 34 student-athletes earn Conference Player of the Week honors this season. He is the third Wheeling Baseball player to be honored, joining teammates Edward Mateo and Sebastian Khan being honored this season. The Cardinal baseball team also earned the last Conference Player of the Week honor, when Sebastian Khan earned Pitcher of the Week honors back on February 16th.
The Wheeling University Baseball team returns to action on Saturday, March 7th, when they kick-off a four-game weekend series against Bluefield State with first pitch at 1 PM.
