Wheeling, W. Va. - This weekend, the Wheeling University Baseball team (5-3, 0-0) is set to head to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to battle Carolina University in a three-game series. Due to rain in the area on Thursday, the team has announced that their three-game set will be pushed back a day from it's original schedule. The three-game series will now open on Saturday with doubleheader action beginning at 1 PM, followed by the single nine-inning game on Sunday at 2 PM.
The Cardinals are coming off their official home opening weekend at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston, West Virginia, when they welcomed Mansfield University in for a three-game series. Wheeling would take an early lead in the opening game of the series, but the Mountaineers came back with a four-run eighth inning that sealed the deal on a 10-5 Cardinal loss. The second day saw the two teams in doubleheader action, with the first of those two games being an extra-inning thriller. The two teams would play 10 innings in the opener, before a walk-off hit by pitch would give the Cardinals a 6-5 win to even the series at a game apiece. The final game, would see the two teams sit tied at 1-1 through four innings, but five runs in the final three innings was enough to give Mansfield the series win. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 3-2 in Atlantic Regional play as they look to rebound to close out February.
