Spring Sports Sweep High Flyer of the Week Awards on Final Crossover Week

Wheeling, W. Va. - With the Basketball conference championships being played last week, the final week of crossover between the winter and spring sports commenced. On Tuesday, the Wheeling University Athletic Department announced their weekly Cardinal High Flyer of the Week honors, and it was the spring sports that swept the honors in the final crossover week of the season. Wheeling Women's Lacrosse player Jovie Noack earned the Female High Flyer of the Week award, while Baseball player Brock Elliott earned the Male High Flyer of the Week honors.

It was a big week of action for the Cardinals, and it got kicked off in the sunshine state for Wheeling Softball's annual Spring Break trip. The Cardinals would play eight games during the week, including four at The Spring Games, and Wheeling would put together a 2-6 record during the week. It included wins against the University of Sioux Falls and Dominican during the week, as the Cardinals gained momentum on the road. Wheeling Women's Lacrosse would get some momentum of their own as they hosted Chestnut Hill Tuesday. After dropping their first three games of the year, the Cardinal offense came alive with 16 goals, six of those coming in the final quarter, as Wheeling walked away with a 16-9 win. Thursday would start the Cardinal's run in the MEC Tournament, with Wheeling Women's Basketball playing in the Quarterfinals.

They would take on #3 seeded University of Charleston and, despite battling back late, would fall 69-55. The Men's Basketball team would take the court the next day for their Quarterfinal match-up, taking on #6 seeded Concord. It would once again be an early lead that would effect the Cardinals and they fell 96-71 to bring their tournament run to an end. Friday would also start a four-game weekend set for Wheeling Baseball against Bluefield, with the team splitting their first two games. Saturday, both Rugby teams were in action, with the men going 3-1-1 across five games, while the women finished second at the Valley 7's going 3-1 in their four games. Wheeling Men's Lacrosse would add their first win of the season to round out the day, battling from behind for an 8-7 win over Holy Family. The weekend wrapped up with the fianl two games of the four-game set with Bluefield State, as Wheeling Baseball combined for 21 runs as the Cardinals earned a big Regional weekend win.

Jovie Noack is earning her first Cardinal High Flyer of the Week award of the season, after leading Women's Lacrosse to a 2-0 week on the field. Of the Cardinal's 41 goals scored during the week, Noack played a part in 15 of those goals, finishing with 10 goals and five assists during the week. It would start in the team's battle with Chestnut Hill, where the senior finished with a season-best seven goals and one assist in the team's 16-9 win over Chestnut Hill. She finished just three goals shy of her career high, and led the Cardinals to their first win of the season. She would come back in the second game of the week, and set a new career-high with four assists in the effort. She added three goals to the effort to finish with seven points, finishing second on the team in the 25-2 win over Lake Erie.

Brock Elliott is also taking home his first Cardinal High Flyer of the Week award of the season, picking up both a win and a save in Wheeling's Sunday doubleheader with Bluefield State. He would end up totaling 5.0 innings of work, allowing just one hit while striking out four batters. He would start his day in game one, coming in to try and save an 8-6 Cardinal lead. He would end up retiring all three batters he faced, earning his third save of the season. He would come back as the starting pitcher in game two, and retired the first three batters he faced in that game. He would end up throwing 4.0 innings allowing just one hit, and followed his third save of the year with his first win of the season.

 Noack is taking home the first Cardinal High Flyer of the Week award of the season for Wheeling Women's Lacrosse, while Elliott earns the second such award for Wheeling Baseball. Elliott joins teammate Edward Mateo in winning honors, while Noack sets the tone for Women's Lacrosse. Last week, the department honored Acrobatics & Tumbling athlete Gabriella Jantz and Men's Basketball player Tee Harris Jr.

The next Wheeling University Athletic event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 11th, when Wheeling Women's Lacrosse hits the road to face Slippery Rock at 4 PM.
