Luke Meyer Slugs His Way to NCBWA Atlantic Regional Hitter of the Week

Wheeling, W. Va. - For the first time in 2026, the Wheeling University Baseball team (8-3, 0-0) secured a weekend sweep over Carolina University. The effort was led by a 46-run outburst by the Cardinal offense, and their offensive leader would be recognized by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA). Designated Hitter Luke Meyer was named the NCBWA Hitter of the Week, marking the third time in the first four weeks that Wheeling Baseball has been recognized on the regional stage.

Meyer served as the team's designated hitter in all three games, finishing the weekend 8-12 (.667) with a home run, a triple, a double, and six RBI across the three-game series. He would pick up multiple hits in each of the three games, and has now put together multi-hit efforts in six games this season. The effort helped raise his season batting average to .452 to lead the team across 42 at-bats. He also leads the team with 14 RBI through 10 games, while tying for the team lead with three home runs on the young season. He has picked up a hit in 10 of the 11 games he has played in, and is riding a modest three-game hitting streak coming into the weekend.

He would save his best effort for last against Carolina U, when he wrapped up the series with a 4-5 day, scoring two runs while picking up his second home run of the weekend as well as his lone double. He got the scoring started for wheeling lining an RBI double to left in the top of the first inning, but his big blow would come in the top of the seventh. He would step up in the top of the seventh to lead-off the inning and blasted a solo home run over the right field wall. It would open up the Cardinal lead to 11-6, and served as Meyer's team-lead tying third home run of the season. It capped off a big weekend for the redshirt freshman, as he led the Cardinals to the weekend sweep.

With Meyer being named the NCBWA Hitter of the Week, it is the third time in the first four weeks of the season that the Cardinal baseball team has been recognized on the regional level. He joins teammates Sebastian Khan and Edward Mateo in being recognized, and is the second Cardinal hitter to be recognized this season. The last Cardinal to be honored was Sebastian Khan back on February 19th, when he was named the NCBWA Pitcher of the Week.

The Wheeling University Baseball team returns to action on Friday, March 5th, when they host Bluefield State at GoMart Ballpark, with first pitch 3 PM.
