Box Score Harrogate, Tn. - The Wheeling Men's Lacrosse team (0-1,0-0) traveled down to Harrogate, Tennessee to take on Lincoln Memorial (LMU) in their season opener.
LMU started the day off strong by scoring the first four goals of the game within the first quarter. It wouldn't be till the final seconds of the quarter till the Cardinals got on the board by Jack Rowe and Andrew Turner, with being a man up. The first quarter ended 4-1, in favor of LMU, but the Cardinals were ready to catch up.
LMU scored the first goal of the second quarter, after only 30 seconds of play. Zach Bridenbaker would then answer back for Wheeling with a goal two minutes later. LMU would get the ball off the faceoff and score right away. Two minutes later, Jake Rowe found Nate Castner and fired one in the back of the net to shorten the gap. Andrew Turner would help shorten the gap again by scoring a minute and a half later. LMU would get the final two scores of the half and go into half time up 8-4.
At the start of the second half, the Cardinals came out strong, but LMU came out stronger. LMU scored the first goal of the new half only 13 seconds in, and being man up. It would be nine minutes later into the quarter until another goal was scored; and it was scored by LMU, who was also a man up again. They would then score a minute and a half later to make it 11-4. Josh Wesneski would then find the back of the net for the first time in the third quarter with only 22 seconds left. The Cardinals would end the quarter down 11-5.
LMU would get the final quarter started off with scoring their 12th goal of the game, two minutes and 30 seconds in. The Cardinals would get their quarter started about six minutes in with Zander Thomas finding Finn Wotton the ball to get another on the board, while being man up. LMU would get three more within four minutes to end their day. It would only leave the Cardinals three minutes and 27 seconds to try to catch up. They would get two more goals to end the day with Ayden Shepard finding Finn Wotton, and Zander Thomas finding Zach Bridenbaker in the final six seconds of the game.
The Cardinals were unable to catch up to LMU, and would end the day down 15-8. The Cardinals start their season off with a loss, but will have three weeks to prepare for the first conference game of the season.
The Wheeling Men's Lacrosse team will hit the road again in three weeks on Saturday, February 28th to Grand Rapids, Michigan to face off with Davenport in their first conference game of the season.
