#13 Men’s Golf Releases 2026 Spring Schedule with Eyes on NCAA Team Berth

Wheeling, W. Va. - During the Fall 2025 season, the Wheeling University Men's Golf team began a new era under Head Coach Thadd Obecny. The starting five featured four new golfers, and the group came together to earn the team's first ranking in the region in since the 2000's began. On Thursday, the team released their 2026 Spring Schedule, with their sights set on earning their first-ever NCAA Regional Tournament Team Bid.

The fall season was a big one for the Wheeling Men's Golf program, with the team improving in every facet of play. They finished top 10 in four of their five tournaments during the regular season, and only got better as the year went on. After starting the year with a 4th place finish at the Wheeling Invitational over two rounds, the Cardinals would carry that momentum as the season went on. They would pick up their second top five finish three weeks later, playing at the Hannastown Invitational, where they finished 5th with a three-round score of 903. They rounded out the regular season with a third place finish at the Pitt-Johnstown Invitational, shooting a season-best three-round score of 862. They carried that momentum into the 2025 MEC Men's Golf Championships, and the team would lead after one round of play. They remained in the top three through day two, but ended up finishing fourth overall with a three-day score of 909.

With the Cardinals being ranked #13 in the Atlantic Region, the 2026 Spring Schedule features a heavy dose of that Atlantic Regional competition. They kick things off with a spring trip to Hickory, North Carolina for the Brunswick Open, hosted by Mountain East Conference (MEC) rival Fairmont State March 12th - 14th. It will give them a chance to get away from the cold winter weather around Wheeling and get their feet wet once again on the regional stage. They come back home 10 days later, and will continue the regional run at the CAL-U Invitational from March 22nd  through the 24th. As the Calendar flips to April, the team will head to the annual MEC Spring Classic, running April 6th – 8th. The Cardinals will be looking to build on their fourth place team finish in the fall, as they look for their first All-MEC golfer since former Cardinal Yadhu Urs won honors during the 2021-2022 season.

With the conference event in the rearview mirror, the Cardinals will head to Indiana University of Pennsylvania April 13th – 15th. They wrap up the spring regular season heading to Pitt-Johnstown from April 19th – 21st as they round out their regional stretch. It will be a chance for the Cardinals to play the course that will host the 2026 NCAA Division II Men's Golf East/Atlantic Super Regional, letting them feel out the national stage course. The Wheeling Men's Golf team has never earned a team bid to the event, but sent Urs to the event back during the 2022 season. This year, the event will be held May 7th – 9th, and the Cardinals will be fighting to be one of the teams at the event.

The Wheeling University Men's Golf team tees-off the 2026 Spring schedule on Thursday, March 12th, when they compete on day one of the Brunswick Open.
