Wheeling, W. Va. - With the 2025 fall season coming to a close Clippd Scoreboard has released their first regional rankings of the season across all eight regions. After finishing fourth at the 2025 Mountain east Conference (MEC) Men's Golf Championships, the Wheeling University Men's Golf team was ranked among the top teams in the region. The Cardinals were ranked #13 in the Atlantic Regional Poll, #142 nationally, and currently hold the final spot to qualify for the 2025 NCAA DII Atlantic Regional Championships in May.
The 2025 fall season was an impressive season for the Cardinals, and their first under new Head Men's Golf Coach Thadd Obecny. Wheeling would start the year with a bang, finishing fourth at the Wheeling Invitational and, after a 14th place finish at the Golden eagle Invitational, they would never look back. The Cardinals finished top 10 in each of their three remaining tournaments, with their best effort coming at the Sunnehanna Invitational. They finished third overall at the event, putting up a three-round score of 862. As they headed into the MEC Men's Golf Championships, the Cardinals were riding high after 18 holes, holding the top spot in the field. They would eventually drop to fourth in the standings, and had their first All-Tournament team member since the 2019 season.
For the Wheeling Men's Golf program, it is the first time in the last decade that the program has been recognized among the top teams in the Atlantic Region. In the spring, the top 13 teams from the Atlantic Region will compete at the 2026 NCAA DII Atlantic Regional Championships, and the Cardinals are clinging to the final spot in the regional field. They are one of five MEC teams ranked in the top 15 in the region, and are ranked the fourth highest out of those teams. Charleston (6th), Glenville State (7th), and Fairmont State (11th) are ranked ahead of them and West Liberty (15th) ranked below them. The Cardinals look to continue to climb the regional rankings as they prepare for the spring season.
Leading the first Atlantic Regional Ranking of the season was Gannon University, who averaged 28.22 points and was ranked #45 nationally. They were followed by Pitt-Johnstown with 24.58 points and West Chester added 22.37 average points.
