Men’s Golf Heads to Hannastown for Co-Hosted Event with CAL-U

Wheeling, W. Va. – After playing through a full conference schedule over their first three tournaments of the year, the Wheeling University Men's Golf team now heads to the regional stage. The Cardinals begin the two tournament stretch at the Hannastown Invitational, where they will serve as co-hosts with California University of Pennsylvania. After comparing themselves with their Mountain East Conference (MEC) competition over the first three tournaments of the year, Wheeling will now compare themselves with some of the best teams around the region.

Last time out, the Cardinals headed to The University of Charleston for the second straight week as they competed at the Stonewall Invitational. They once again got the chance to see a lot of their competition from around the MEC, with all nine programs being featured at the event. In round one, the Cardinals were able to sit in the top 10, shooting a combined score of 312, but it would be the jump from round one to round two that got them going. They would drop six strokes off their score over their second 18 holes, and finished tied for the lowest team score in the round. It helped them jump into the top five of the event, and they looked to keep that standing over the final 18 holes. However, they would shoot a 314 over the final round, dropping two spots to finish 7th overall on the day.

Leading the Cardinals for the second week in a row was Graduate Student Sean Dobson, who put up his best three-round score of the season. He would finish tied for second at the event, shooting a 219 across the three rounds of play, and finished tied for the top spot in the conference. His best showing would come in round two, when he finished –1 and tied for the third lowest score in the round. For his efforts, Dobson would be named the MEC's Men's Golfer of the Week as he earned his second top 10 finish of the season. He helped the Wheeling Men's and Women's Golf program sweep the weekly honors, as he continues his strong showing to start the 2025 fall season.

The other Cardinal to crack the top 30 of the event was fellow graduate student Troy Loughry, who finished 28th with a three-day score of 230. After a slow start, Loughry had a big bounce back in the second and third rounds of the event. He would shoot a tournament-best 74 in the second round of competition, and kept that momentum rolling right into the third round, where he shot a 75. Loughry would lead the Cardinals in their first event of the season, and has been a top golfer for the team since. Rounding out the Cardinal's top three was Lodin Femoen, who was just inside the top 50 of the event finishing 47th with a three-round score of 236. For Femoen, it was a strong day one that fueled him, as he shot a 79 on day one, followed by a 75 on day two to round out the first day of competition.

The Cardinals will serve as co-hosts for Monday's tournament, hosting the event with Atlantic Regional Opponent CAL-U. The event will be held at the Hannastown Golf Course in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, featuring teams from both the MEC and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Joining Wheeling from the MEC will be Concord, Davis & Elkins, Glenville State, Point Park, Fairmont State, and West Liberty. The PSAC will bring Shepherd, Millersville, CAL-U, IUP, Pitt-Johnstown, and Clarion as the teams battle on the regional stage. The teams will play the first two rounds of competition on day one, and will follow that up with the final round on day three.
