Wheeling, W. Va. – After their second trip down to Charleston, West Virginia, the Wheeling University Men's Golf team picked up their second top 10 finish of the season. On Wednesday, the Mountain East Conference (MEC) released their weekly Men's and Women's Golfer of the Week Awards, presented by the Healthplan , and it was the Cardinal's top golfer at the event who was honored. Graduate Student Sean Dobson was named the MEC's Men's Golfer of the Week, after finishing tied for second overall at the Stonewall Classic.
After finishing 7th at the Golden Eagles Invitational a week ago, Dobson jumped five spots in the individual standings this time around to finish in a three-way tie for the second place spot in the tournament field. He would put together a two-day score of 219, tying with Point Park's Milo Thin and Davis & Elkins's Lucio Pavivich. It was the second time this season that Dobson has cracked the top 10 of an event and the second straight round where Dobson has led the Cardinals. It was a big day one for the graduate student as he started strong shooting a (73) +2 in round one, and followed that up with his best performance of the event in round two. He would shoot an even par for the second time this season, and sat in that tie for second heading into the final day of competition. He would finish out shooting a 75 over the final 18 holes to round out a big tournament for the graduate student.
His strongest showing came in that second round of the event as he started things off with six straight pars to start the event. He took his first stroke off his score on hole seven and added two more pars to wrap things up and sit -1 after the first nine holes. As he headed to the back nine, Dobson's success continued with two more pars and another birdie on hole 12 to bring his score to -2 for the round. Despite hitting double on hole 17, Dobson would get one of those strokes back on hole 18 with what was his third birdie of the day. It was tied for the third lowest score in the round and was just one stroke behind Glenville State's Hector Arriaga and Charleston's Stephen Davis for the top spot in the round. Dobson was able to hold steady to that #2 spot in the final round to wrap things up. Dobsin is one of two graduate students for the young Cardinal team as he looks to continue to lead the program down the MEC Championship stretch.
Sean Dobson is the fourth Wheeling University Student Athlete to earn MEC Player of the Week Honors this season, and the second honoree this week. He joins Wheeling Football player Brett Jackson, who was named the MEC Football Special Teams Player of the Week. Dobson is the first Wheeling Men's Golfer to win player the week honors since September 26th, 2024, when former Cardinal Robin Duzzman took home the honors.
The Wheeling University Men's Golf team returns to action on Monday, September 22nd, when they compete at the Hannastown Invitational.
