Wheeling, W. Va. – After playing together for the first two weeks, the Wheeling University Women's Golf team is playing their first solo tournament of the year on Monday. The Cardinals travel to Athens, West Virginia to take on the Concord/Glenville State Invitational with tee times beginning at 9 AM. It will be their third straight Mountain East Conference (MEC) event of the season as they continue to push towards the 2025 MEC Women's Golf Championships.
Last time out, the Cardinals competed at the Golden Eagles Invitational, where they faced seven other teams from across the conference. They would play one 18-hole round on each day, with the team playing well in the first round. They would shoot a 435 after 18 holes of competition, with two of their golfers sitting in the low 80's for the round. They were just 11 strokes behind West Liberty entering the second round of play and would have one golfer in the top 50 of the event. As they headed into the second day of competition, the Cardinals had some strong individual performances, but would end up adding to their team score. The Cardinals would finish 18th overall in the team standings and shot a combined 905 across the two rounds of play. Despite the team score, it was the team's veteran golfers that led the way as they continue down the conference stretch.
Leading the way was senior Ella Keffer who wrapped up a strong week of play, finishing 33rd in the field. After taking second overall at the Wheeling Invitational two days prior, Keffer came out and dropped two strokes off her two round score from the Wheeling Invitational. In round one, Keffer got off to a slow start in the first round of the event, shooting an 82, but would bounce back in a big way. She would shoot a 75 over the final 18 holes of play to shoot +5 and finished tied for 13th overall during the second round it was the third time in four rounds this season that Keffer shot a new PR, breaking her old PR of 79 by four strokes. It lowered her season average round score to 79.0 across four rounds of action. Keffer earned the first All-MEC hinkrf her career in 2025, being named Second Team All-MEC a season ago, Keffer is looking to add to her trophy case and lead the Cardinals to the third day of the MEC Women's Golf Championships.
Finishing behind her was sophomore Brielle Milhoan who had her best showing of the season so far. Milhoan dropped 21 strokes off her score from the Wheeling Invitational, and started things strong with an 84 in round one. However, it was round two that saw Milhoan set a new PR, shooting an 82 to round out the event. Milhoan was able to crack the top 60 of the event, finishing tied for 55th overall. Like Keffer, Milhoan has been through the trails of a collegiate golf season and looks to continue her growth in the course. Rounding out the day was Mallory Bozovich, who got herself off to a strong start in the tournament. In the first round, she would finish just one stroke behind her PR, shooting a 114 for her best performance of the season. Bozovich joined the team last spring season and has been a steady presence since then. She looks to continue lowering her score as she continues through the regular season.
Monday's event will be the third MEC Tournament for the Women's Golf team as part of a four-tournament stretch. It will also be the first time that the Men's and Women's teams are playing in separate events. The women will be playing in the Pipesteam Collegiate Open, co-hosted by Concord and Glenville State. The event will be held at the Pipesteam Championship Golf Course. Each participant will play one round of action on each day, with five total teams participating. Among the participating teams are MEC opponents Wheeling, West Liberty, Concord, and Glenville State University, with Bluefield being the line non-conference team on the slate.
