Box Score 2 Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Baseball team (12-24, 4-15) was scheduled to play games three and four of their doubleheader with Fairmont State on Saturday afternoon. After getting game one in, the rains would come down and ended up making field conditions unplayable to resume game two. Despite dropping the first game to the Falcons 7-6, the Cardinals would finish the weekend 2-1, securing their first weekend win since the opening weekend of the season against Pitt-Johnstown.
The Cardinals would send Sebastian Khan to the hill for the first game, and he would get into an early jam allowing the first two runners of the game to reach on a single and a double to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Khan would bear down and got a pop out for the first out of the inning before back-to-back strikeouts stranded those runners and kept it a 0-0 game. However, the Cardinals ended up going 1-2-3 in their half of the first before Fairmont state for the first two runs of the game in the second. Khan would have to once again get himself out of a jam with A bases loaded strikeout that brought the Cardinals back to the bat racks. Christian Boyles would get things going with a leadoff single and with one out the Cardinals would get on the board.
An errant pick-off throw would allow Boyles to go first to third and Chris Sauer would drive him in with an RBI single to left that made it a 2-1 game. After a rocky start, Khan settled in with two quick innings in the third and fourth before his offense gave him his first lead of the day. It would once again be Boyles that got things started with a one-out walk and with two outs Chris Sauer would be hit by a pitch. Dylan Maltby put together a strong at-bat, drawing a two-out walk and Jacob Lentz stepped in once again with the bases loaded. He would continue to hit the ball well, lining a bases clearing double down the right field line to clear the bases. It brought his RBI total for the weekend to nine and put the Cardinals out in front 4-2 after four innings of play.
Fairmont State would strike for two runs of their own in the top of the fifth and the back and forth would commence as the teams headed to the bottom of the fifth tied at 4-4. The Cardinals were looking to respond and Brett Johnson would get things going with a lead-off single, followed by a single from Spencer Craig that put runners at first and second with nobody out. Keaton Ference would step in and brought home Johnson with an RBI double and the Cardinals would retake the lead at 5-4. A strikeout and a groundout would leave runners at second and third with two outs before Chris Sauer drew an intentional walk. Maltby would step in and worked his way on with a walk to bring home Craig and push the Wheeling lead to 6-4.
Khan would come out to start the sixth inning, and gave up a single and a walk before Fairmont State's Tyler Haskins deposited a three-run home run over the left center field wall. It made it a 7-6 game and that score would remain as the Cardinals came to the plate for their final at-bats. Khan would end up throwing 5.0 + innings allowing seven runs, six earned, on eight hits while walking four and striking out five. Damian Tarin would come on in relief and kept it a one-run game, throwing 2.0 scoreless innings allowing just one hit and striking out two batters. Wheeling came to the plate for their final at-bats trailing 7-6, and got a two-out spark from Nicolas Ancelet with a triple. However, a flyout would bring the game to an end as they fell 7-6. The teams would take the field for the second game, but before Wes Landis could throw his first pitch, rain would come pouring down soaking the field and making conditions un-playable to continue the series.
Leading the way for the Cardinals for the second straight day was Jacob Lentz, who finished 1-3 with a double and three RBI. It brought his weekend RBI total to nine as he finished the three-game weekend set 4-10 with a home run, two doubles, and nine RBI. Finishing behind him was Chris Sauer, who finished 1-1 with an RBI on the day, while reaching base all three times drawing two walks on the day. Dylan Maltby and Keaton Ference would drive in the final two Cardinal runs, with Ference leading the effort going 1-4 with a double.
The Wheeling University Baseball team returns to action on Tuesday, April 22nd, when they host IUP with first pitch scheduled for 3 PM.
