Greensburg, PA. – After cutting the second round short on Monday, the Wheeling University Men's Golf team wrapped things up at the Hanasstown Invitational. The Cardinals would finish the three round event with a team score of 908 to finish 11th overall at the event. It was a big finish for sophomore
Robin Duzmann who finished second overall at the event, shooting a career best 209 across the three rounds.
After sitting in first place after 18 holes, Duzmann would go stroke for stroke with IUP's Alex Swinerton. Duzmann shot a career best 69 in the second round of competition as the two remained tied for first on the leaderboard. On the front nine, Duzmann would shoot a +1 and jumped into the first place spot heading into the back nine. This was where he put together his best showing of the day, picking up three birdies and shooting a -2. However, Swinerton added an eagle and shot -3 to even Duzmann's mark and the two sat tied after round two. In round three, Duzmann once again had the lead after the front nine, picking up a birdie and an even par to take a one stroke lead. He came back with an even par on the back nine, but Swinerton shot a -2 to take the top spot. It was Duzmann's best finish of his collegiate career as he was the top finisher among Mountain East Conference (MEC) competitors.
Behind him was sophomore
Ryan Courtney, who lowered his score across all three rounds of competition. He finished tied for 39th with a three round score of 229. After taking a stroke off his round one score to shoot a 75 in round two, but his top performance would come in round three. He picked up three birdies, with two of those coming on the back nine. He birdied on holes 13 and 16, shooting a +2 on the back nine, to shoot a round-best 73 on the day.
Luis Alvarez would also pick up his highest collegiate placing, finishing with a round score of 236. His round one performance was a new career low of 74, and he followed that with an 80 in round two and an 82 in round three.
Lodin Femoen and
Caleb Minson were the final two Cardinals to compete on day two as
Phillip Halvorsen did not compete in the final two rounds of competition. Femoen would finish tied for 80th with a three round score of 242. He finished round two sign an 81, adding one stroke to his round one score, and added another 80 in round three.
Caleb Minson finished out his first collegiate tournament with a three-day score of 242. He would set his new collegiate PR in the second round of competition, shooting a 75 over the second 18 holes to jump up in the standings. He finished the tournament with an 85 in round three as he wrapped up the two days of competition.
The Wheeling University Men's Golf team returns to action on Monday, October 7th when they compete in day one of the MEC Men's Golf Championships.
