Washington, PA. - After leading the field on day one, it came down to the final 18 holes on Tuesday when the Wheeling University Men's Golf team played round two of the Vulcan Fire Invitational. IT was a competitive field throughout the day, but the Cardinals would finish in a three-way tie for second, shooting a two-round score of 601 to round out the event. They would place three golfers in the top 20 of the event, with two big drops leading the day two score sheet.
Taking the top spot was Troy Loughry, who took three shots off his day one score to shoot a 70 (-2) in the round. The graduate student would tee off on hole one, and had hit shots working early. He would par on five straight holes to start the night, before hitting his first birdie of the day on hole six. He finished the front nine with three straight pars and hit the turn sitting at –1 with nine holes to go. He continued his consistency onto the back nine, hitting back-to-back pars, before adding his first stroke to his score on hole 12. He would get that stroke back with a birdie on hole 13, and would add another birdie on hole 16 to get to –2. He would put together back-to-back pars on holes 17 and 18 to finish the round and completed the first under par round of the spring for the Cardinals. It was enough to jump him to second in the tournament field, representing his highest tournament finish as a Cardinal.
The biggest round one to round two drop came from Lodin Femoen, who took six strokes off his day one score to shoot 77 over the final 18 holes. He would finish +4 on the front nine, before putting together a strong back nine to round out the day. He would par on the first four holes of the back nine, and hit two birdies over his final five holes to round out the day. The back-to-back birdies helped him finish at +5 in the round, and jumped to 46th in the field. Sean Dobson would finish as the Cardinal's second-leading golfer at the event, shooting a two-round score of 151 (+7). He would shoot 77 in the second round, with his best effort once again coming on the back nine. He would shoot +1 over the final nine holes, hitting one birdie and finishing with six pars on the back nine. He would finsih 14th overall at the event, rounding out his second tournament of the year.
Zak Collins and Federico Cobos Kallmann would round out the second round team event, with Collins shooting a 78 and Kallmann hitting an 83 to round out the night. Collins would be the final golfer to score at the event, with his success coming on the front nine. He would shoot just +2 over the first nine holes, hitting one of his two birdies over the first nine holes. He would add his second birdie of the day on the back nine, and finished at +6 for the round. Kallmann would round out the day, shooting an 83 to finish out his event. He would hit two birdies on the back nine, while adding three pars in the front nine. Makstr McIntyre, Luke Wennberg, and Elias Ekenes-Fosback would end the day in the individual portion of the event, McIntyre leading the way with a 75.
The Wheeling University Men's Golf team returns to action on Tuesday, April 7th, when they compete on day one of the MEC Spring Classic, with tee times beginning at around 9 AM.
