Wheeling, W. Va. -The annual Mountain East Conference (MEC) Spring Classic came to the Palmer Golf Course at the Spiedel Golf Resort at Oglebay Park. The Wheeling University Men's Golf team had two teams in competition, with their A Team finishing sixth overall with a combined score of 293 across 18 holes. It was their lowest score of the spring so far, and the Cardinals would place one golfer in the top 10 in what was a loaded competition field.
Leading the way for the Cardinals was sophomore Zak Collins, who would shoot an even par at 71 on the day. Collins would get his day started on hole two kicking off what was a strong front nine for the sophomore. After adding a stroke to his score early, Collins would get that stroke back two holes later, shooting a birdie on hole four to get him back to even par. He would be consistent throughout the round, hitting par on each or his next five holes as he reached the turn on hole nine. He would add his second birdie of the round, and entered the turn at -2. He would hit the back nine and continued his consistency from the front nine, hitting par on eight of the nine holes to round out the day. He would add just one stroke on that back nine, and it brought his final score to Even at 71.
Finishing just four spots and one stroke behind Collins was Sean Dobson, who placed 13th with a round score of 72 (+1). Like Collins, Dobson would also finish the front nine under par, shooting -1 through the first nine holes. His best showing of the event would come on hole 5, when he made a birdie put to knock a stroke off his score. The back nine would see Dobson match Collins's score, shooting +1 through the final nine holes at 37. He would shoot a pair of 3's on the back nine as he continues to shoot 75 or lower throughout the spring. Sitting just outside the top 20 was graduate student Troy Loughry, who finished 23rd overall, shooting a 74 through round one of the event. He would be consistent throughout the night, shooting a 37 on both of the front nine and the back nine, to round out his day. He would pick up his lone back nine birdie on hole 13 to round out the day.
The final scoring golfer on the Cardinal A team was Federico Cobos Kallmann. Kallmann was competing in his first-ever MEC event. Kallmann sits 39th overall after 18 holes, shooting a 75 for the first 18 holes. Luke Loughry, Kallmann was consistent throughout the day, shooting equal scores of 38 on both the front nine and the back nine. He would round out the back nine strong to finish the day, shooting a 3 on both holes 17 and 19. Rounding out the A team for the Cardinals was Luke Wennberg, who sat just three strokes off Kallmann's pace with a 78 to round out the event. Wennberg's day started strong with a birdie on hole three and he immediately answered as another group came on hole four. He would sit tied for fourth on the team with a 37. The back nine would cause him some trouble, but he was able to finish his day.
Along with the A Team, the Cardinals would also have a B team in competition, with Elias Ekenes-Fosback, Makstr McIntyre, Lodin Femoen, Luis Alvarez, and Lorenzo Lupin competed. The five-man team was led by the effort of Ekenes-Fosback, who finished at +4 with a 75. Rounding out the day were three individuals, with Will Munhall, Vladimir Zhang, and Brayden Scott competing. Munhall would lead the way with a 77 (+6) to round out the effort.
The Wheeling University Men's Golf team returns to action for round two of the MEC Spring Classic on Wednesday, April 8th, with tee times at noon.
