Box Score 2 North Canton, OH. - After having their game rained out two weeks ago, the Wheeling University Baseball team (19-17, 9-11) played the makeup of their midweek matchup against Walsh on Tuesday. Wheeling made the trip to North Canton, Ohio and in the end they would fall to the Cavaliers 8-0. Wheeling got a strong start on the mound, but it was a pair of big innings late by Walsh that would end up costing the Cardinals.
The strong start was turned in by
Carson Ashby, who made just his second start of the season for the Cardinals. Ashby would get all three possible outcomes in a 1-2-3 first inning with a flyout, groundout, and strikeout. He would allow his first base runner of the game in the second when he hit the first batter of the inning. It would be the first of two hit batsmen during the inning, but those were the only two base runners of the inning as he kept it a scoreless game. Ashby would keep the no-hitter going through three innings, walking his first batter of the day, but getting out of it with the score sitting at 0-0 after three innings. Ashby would come back out for the bottom of the fourth, but walked the first batter he faced to round out his day.
He would finish with 3.0 scoreless and hitless innings, while walking two and striking out three to get the Cardinals started.
Derrike Goutremout would take over and picked up Ashby, keeping the no-hitter going as four innings came and went. However, Walsh would put together their biggest offensive showing of the day in the bottom of the fifth, scoring six runs to take a 6-0 lead over the Cardinals. Up until that point, the Cardinal offense has its share of traffic on the base paths, with six total base runners and four hits through four innings, but they weren't able to push a run across. The final two runs of the day for Walsh would come across in the bottom of the sixth as they took an 8-0 lead with three innings to play. The Cardinals needed a stopper out of the pen and they would get just that as three pitchers combined to shut out the Cavaliers.
It started with
Ethan Wendell, who came on after the Cavaliers had built an 8-0 lead. Wendell would face some traffic throughout his outing, but was able to work out of those situations to keep it an 8-0 game. Wendell would not allow a hit over his shutout inning while walking three and striking out two. In the eighth, the Cardinals would call on
Sebastian Khan, who allowed one hit over his inning of work, but kept Walsh at bay. He struck out two of the three batters he retired before giving way to
Malkolm Barrett for the eight inning. Like Kahn, Barrett did give up a gur, but was able to work out of it, walking one and striking out two of the three batters he faced. The Cardinals would come to the plate in the top of the ninth and, despite a two out walk by Nic Ancelet, the Cardinals would fall to Walsh 8-0.
Riley Day would lead the way for the Cardinals, finishing 2-3 with a pair of singles on the day. Day has been a key piece off the bench for the Cardinals this season and took advantage as the Designated Hitter on the day.
Braden Killens would pick up the team's line extra base hit of the day with a double, while
Tyler Livingston and
Carlos D'Amato rounded out the offense with each picking up a single.
The Wheeling University Baseball team returns to action on Saturday, April 20th, when they travel to Mylan Park to take on Fairmont State at 4 PM.
