Box Score New Orleans, LA. – After an off day on Saturday, the Wheeling University Baseball team (3-2, 0-0) wrapped up their three-game series with Dillard on Sunday afternoon. It was once again another big showing for the Cardinals as they took down Dillard 19-2 to complete the sweep of the three-game weekend set. In total, the Wheeling offense would generate 36 runs across the three-game set as they moved to 3-2 on the season.
As they did in the first two games of the series, the Cardinals would get on the board in the top of the first, as Nic Ancelet walked to start things off. He stole second to get a runner to scoring position and a single from
Spencer Craig put runners on the corners and nobody out. A sacrifice fly by
Braden Killens would bring in the game's first run and the Cardinals would jump out to a 1-0 advantage.
Nicholas Martinez would be the one to get the start for the Cardinals, and retired the side while allowing one hit in the first. It would be the start of a big day for Martinez, who would throw 4.1 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits, walking one, and striking out five batters. Meanwhile, the Cardinal's offense continued to add on throughout the night.
In the top of the second, Wheeling would get a runner on with one out thanks to a
Kaleb Scull single. He would steal second before
Dylan Maltby hit his first home run of the season to make it a 3-0 Cardinals advantage. After a
Jacob Lentz walk, he was caught stealing before Ancelet replaced him with a triple. Craig would step back up and promptly singled back up the middle to bring Ancelet home and make it a 4-0 game. The score would remain 4-0 by innings end, but five more runs would come home in the top of the third.
Riley Day started things with a home run that would be the big blow of the inning, while two wild pitches and two RBI groundouts would bring home the other two runs of the inning. After three innings, the Cardinals were holding a 9-0 lead.
Wheeling would be held off the board for each of the next two innings but the pitching continues it's success. Martinez gave way to
Sebastian Khan in the top of the fifth and the Cardinals were back to work on the sixth. Ancelet would walk to start the inning, stole second, and then advanced to third on a Killens single. He would come home on a sacrifice fly by Thomas Keggereis and the Cardinals would push their lead to 10-0. After Khan worked 0.2 scoreless innings,
Dominic Parker-McDonald would come in, throwing a scoreless bottom of the sixth while walking two and striking out one.
Wes Landis would take over for the game's final three innings and did his job, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out two.
After being held off the board in the top of the seventh, the Cardinals would rally over the final two innings. They scored a combined nine runs between the final two innings as their lead went from 10-0 to 19-2 by games end. In the eighth, it would be a pair of two-run home runs from Killens and
Josh Rush that helped the Cardinals reach the 14-run mark.
Tyler Livingston would then pinch hit and hit his first collegiate home run as the Cardinals extended their lead to 15-2. In the top of the ninth, the Cardinals would add four more runs as
Bode Stewart hit a two-RBI double and Rush and
Scott Kondroik each added RBI singles to round out the day. The Cardinals put together their season-best offensive effort as they picked up their third win of the season.
Leading the way for the Cardinals was
Spencer Craig, who put together a three-hit day, going 3-5 with arun scored and an RBI. The Cardinals also showed off their power with five home runs by five different players including first career home runs by
Dylan Maltby,
Josh Rush, and
Tyler Livingston. Rush and
Braden Killens led the way with three RBI each to round out the day.
The Wheeling University Baseball team returns to action on Saturday, March 2nd, when they head to Bluefield State to start a three-game series.
