Men's Lacrosse Starts Road Stretch Against Davenport

Wheeling, W. Va. – The offense has led the way for the Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team (2-0, 0-0) as they are off and running to start the 2024 season. They hit the road for the second time this year on Saturday, as they head to Grand Rapids, Michigan to take on Davenport University at 12 PM. The Cardinals look to keep their recent string of success going, as they continue down their non-conference stretch before opening Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) play on March 13th.

Wheeling Men's Lacrosse is off to its best start since 2014 with a record of 2-0 after Sunday's huge 20-1 win against Holy Family University. This game gave the Cardinals confidence because it was the first home game, and the offense was in sync. In total, the Cardinals had nine different players score at least one goal on the afternoon, with five of those players finishing with multi-goal efforts. It was a strong start for the Cardinals, as they put up 14 points over the first 30 minutes of play and headed into halftime with a 14-1 advantage. As they came out for the second half, the Cardinals got a chance to dip into some of their depth as everyone got to see the field. Among the scoring were two players scoring their first career goals in Mason Fisher and Wilson Perez-Vasquez as the Cardinals picked up the season-opening win.

A pair of Cardinals would lead the way on offense with Mike Anderson, who led the team in goals last season, scoring four goals and two assists and sophomore Owen Doyle adding a career-best four goals of his own in the effort. Doyle was the one who would get the scoring effort started, putting his first ball into the back of the net at the 11:16 mark of the first quarter, and he kept his success going from there. He helped Wheeling seal the game with three straight goals at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter as he wrapped up his strong day. Doyle scored just two goals during his freshman season and has already doubled that output so far in 2024.

The other four goal scorer was Andersson, who picked up right where he left off in 2023
This will be the third matchup between Wheeling and Davenport with the Panthers getting the best of the Cardinals in the first two games, but they were both close games with Wheeling only losing by one goal in the latest matchup. With this being the first road game of the season Wheeling will have to rely on its leaders to help prepare some of the newer guys for the game and what to expect.

Mike Anderson and Ty Tayor are two of the best players on the team and they are also two of the leaders, so Wheeling will be looking to those two players on Saturday to help get a big win on the road. Anderson is up to 4 goals and two assists on the season while Ty Taylor leads the team in points with 3 goals and 8 assists. Davenport also has some game changers as Braylon Baker has 3 goals and 6 assists on the season and sophomore Jayden Ashley has 4 goals and 2 assists.

The opening face-off for Saturday's game is scheduled for 12 PM inside Zuideman Field on the campus of Davenport University. Follow along with Live Stats by clicking HERE.
