Wheeling, W. Va. - After a long season of competition, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) is honoring its student-athletes for the work they put in off the field. On Thursday, the conference announced their annual Academic All-Conference team, with over 2,500 student-athletes being honored across the conference's 26 sponsored sports. The Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team was well represented on the list, with 14 of their student-athletes making the GMAC Academic All-Conference Team.
All athletes who were honored were nominated by their respective Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR), which for Wheeling University is Missy Bozovich. In order to be eligible for the Academic All-Conference team, a student-athlete's grade point average must be between 3.30 and 4.0 and must be cumulative for their entire collegiate career. The student-Athlete must have also completed one full academic year at their institution to be eligible and must have met the above criteria. The Wheeling Men's Lacrosse team is the only one of the 19 varsity sports that is a member of the GMAC, with the school being an associate member of the conference, and it is the second year in a row that the team has been featured.
It was a big jump for the team in the classroom, with six more student-athletes making the list in 2023 than in 2022. The Cardinals added to that success on the field, posting their best record since the 2018 season, going 5-10 overall and 3-4 in GMAC play. They missed the GMAC playoffs by just one game and were an impressive 4-1 on the road during the season.
