Box Score 2 Frostburg, MD. – Inclement weather moved through Frostburg, Maryland on Saturday, pushing the Wheeling University Baseball team's (19-16, 9-11) second doubleheader with Frostburg State back to Sunday. It was worth the wait as the Cardinals came back and were able to earn a split of the weekend with the Bobcats, going 1-1 on Sunday's doubleheader. They dropped game one to the Bobcats 13-3 before bouncing back in game two to earn a 6-2 win and finish the weekend 2-2 in the four games played.
Game One:
Frostburg State 13,
Wheeling 3
The first game of the day saw both offenses get to work early in the game. Frostburg State got things started in the bottom of the first, putting up a five-spot to take an early 5-0 lead. However, the Cardinals would respond in the top of the second as
Braden Killens singled to start the inning.
Thomas Kegerreis was hit by a pitch and then a wild pitch moved runners to second and third with one out.
Garth Charlton would then step in and picked up both runners with a two-RBI single that made it a 5-2 game. A flyout would end the inning before Frostburg State got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning to push it back to a 7-2 game.
Dominic Parker-McDonald got the start and finished after 1.1 innings allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits while walking one and striking out one. Malkolm Barret would come in to get the Cardinals out of the jam with 0.2 scoreless innings allowing a base runner via a walk and striking out a batter to end the second inning.
Sonny Peluchette would come in relief after a strong outing on Tuesday and held the Bobcats off the board with a scoreless third inning. However, Frostburg State would add a run in the fourth and five runs in the fifth to up their lead to 13-2 after five innings of play. Peluchette would finish 2.0 innings allowing six runs on four hits while walking three and striking out two.
The Cardinals would score their final run in the top of the sixth when
Lucas Rawlins got things started with a one out walk. Catcher's interference allowed Kegerreis to reach before
Kobe Hill came through with a single to load the bases with one out. After a strikeout,
Anthony May stepped in and worked a bases loaded walk to score Rawlins and make it a 13-3 game. That would be the final run of the game for the Cardinals as
Josh Wessler came on to finish the game. He threw two scoreless innings in the game allowing just one hit while striking out one. Wheeling dropped their second game of the series, but hoped to use their strong finish on the mound to propel them into game two.
Kobe Hill would lead the way for the Cardinals , going 1-2 with an RBI in the game.
Garth Charlton and
Anthony May would drive in the other two runs of the day to round out the Wheeling offense.
Braden Killens has the lone multi-hit game for the Cardinals, going 2-3 with a double to round out the day. The Cardinals came back in game two and looked for a split of the four-game series.
Game Two:
Wheeling 6, Frostburg State 2
For the final game of the four-game set, the Cardinals sent
Kyle Dalton to the mound to make his second start of the season. He bounced back nicely after his start against Notre Dame College last week, throwing a 1-2-3 inning in the first to get the Cardinals back to the bat racks. After falling behind early in game one, it was the Cardinals who got ahead first in game two.
Lucas Rawlins walked to leadoff the inning and two batters later
Pete Toula singled to put runners on first and second with one out.
Donovan Dubuisson walked to load the bases and
Sammy Kondroik reached on an infield single to score Rawlins and make it a 1-0 game. They would extend that lead in the top of the third with one out when
Jacob Murray hit a solo home run to make it a 2-0 game after three and a half innings.
Frostburg State would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the third and that would end what was a strong start for Dalton. He lasted 2.1 innings allowing one unearned run on one hit while striking out four batters.
Jake Rife would come on in relief and he was just as dominant out of the pen. He held Frostburg State off the board over 2.2 innings of work allowing one hit while walking two and striking out two. With Frostburg held off the board, the Cardinals held their 2-1 lead heading into the top of the fifth. Murray would start the inning with a single and Rawlins reached on a fielder's choice to put two on and nobody out. Kegerreis would then step in and line an RBI double to score Murray and extend Wheeling's lead to 3-1. Two batters later,
Donovan Dubuisson stepped in and lined a two RBI single to center to make it a 5-1 game.
In the top of the sixth, the Cardinals added their final run of the game when
Lucas Rawlins singled to start the inning. After a pair of Cardinals strikeouts, Dubuisson stepped back in and tripled to right field to bring home Rawlins and make it a 6-1 game in the top of the sixth. With the lead in tact,
Hayden Wilcox came in for the bottom of the sixth and threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth.
Hunter Dyck came in for the bottom of the seventh and Frostburg State scored another run to make it a 6-2 game. However, Dyck finished the game allowing one run on two hits while striking out a batter.
Donovan Dubuisson put together his best game of the season, and was one of four Cardinals to finish with a multi-hit game. He finished a perfect 2-2 with a triple and three RBI, setting a career high for RBI in a game.
Jacob Murray and
Thomas Kegerreis each finished 2-4 with an RBI, while
Lucas Rawlins added a 2-3 day.
Sammy Kondroik added the final RBI on the day, going 1-4 with an RBI in the game. The Cardinals moved to 9-11 in MEC play with the split weekend as they continue their run towards the MEC playoffs.
The Wheeling University Baseball team returns to action on Wednesday, April 19th, when they take on IUP in a nine-inning contest with first pitch at 3 PM.
