Gabriel Hennin Leads Cardinals Defense, Earns GMAC Defensive Player of the Week

Wheeling, W. Va. - The spring season has taken full effect at Wheeling University and Wheeling Men's Lacrosse is flying high coming off back-to-back wins. The program got an even bigger boost on Monday, when the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) announced their weekly Player of the Week Awards. Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse Defender Gabriel Hennin was named the GMAC Defensive Player of the Week, after helping the Cardinals combine for 23 caused turnovers across his two games played this week.

The sophomore was voted a team captain for the first time in his career and has taken on that leadership role on the defensive side of the ball. In the games against D'Youville and Chowan this week, Hennin led the way with six caused turnovers and five ground balls as he helped Wheeling to back-to-back wins for the first time since they took down Felician and St. Thomas Aquinas in consecutive games last season. Of his six turnovers on the week, four of those came against D'Youville as he helped his team to a historic 29-10 win over the Saints. He finished with four caused turnovers and four groundballs as the Cardinals got a much-needed first win of the season in front of the home fans
.
Hennin has captained the Cardinal's defense this season, leading the way with nine caused turnovers and is second on the team with 18 groundballs. Hennin has led a young group this season and has been a big producer since the graduation of former Cardinal Mat Anderson. Hennin looks to continue his success as the season goes on, with teams like Seton Hill and Mercyhurst trying to break through the Cardinals defense. Hennin has six of his nine caused turnovers in his last two games and continues to grow as a leader on the field for this team.

Hennin is the 20th Wheeling University Student-Athlete to earn Conference player of the week honors this season, and the second this week. He joins teammate Mike Andersson, who won the GMAC Offensive Player of the Week two weeks ago as the only two Men's Lacrosse players to take home the award this season. Baseball's Kody McCarley took home the second Player of the Week award this week, when he earned the MEC's Pitcher of the Week Award.

The Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team returns to action on Friday, March 10th, when they host Davenport with the opening faceoff at 4 PM.
