Men’s Lacrosse Looks to Rebounds in Non-Conference Meeting with Frostburg State

Wheeling, W. Va. – On Saturday, the Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team (2-5, 0-1) opened their Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) schedule with a tight loss to Walsh. The Cardinals look to rebound on Tuesday when they host Frostburg State in non-conference action with the opening face-off scheduled for 4 PM. Wheeling is looking for a rebound effort as they get ready for their first Battle of the State game this weekend.

Last time out, the Cardinals took on Walsh in what was a close GMAC game that saw Wheeling fall 13-10. Early on, it was all Cavaliers with Walsh scoring seven goals in the first quarter of play. The Cardinals fell behind 7-3 in the early portion of the game, forcing Wheeling to have to play catch up. They scored two goals in the second quarter and headed into halftime trailing 8-5. The Cardinals continued their battle in the third quarter, getting to within 9-8 halfway through the quarter. However, the comeback would fall just short as Wheeling added two more goals in the fourth, but Walsh just bested them with three goals in that same quarter. The Cardinals fell 13-10 and dropped to 0-1 in GMAC play.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was junior Mike Andersson, who had his best showing since the season opener. Andersson scored a team-high four goals in the game, with all four of those goals coming in the final three quarters. Andersson was tied for first in shots with 10 and led the team with eight shots on goal for an 80% shot on goal percentage. The effort helped put Andersson back in the team lead in goals scored, sitting at 28 goals on the year. He is eight goals off his pace from last season and is shooting 64.3% on shots on goal. Andersson is approaching the 100-goal mark for his career and is just nine goals away from accomplishing that feat. He has been a driving force for the team this season and hopes to lead them back to the GMAC playoffs.

Jacob Knippel was the other multi-goal scorer for the Cardinals, finishing with two goals and one assist for three points. He would put two of his four shots on goal throughout the afternoon and was tied for second on the team with three ground balls on the day. Ty Taylor added another goal and an assist to his record and was tied with Anderson for the team lead with 10 shots. Taylor is now at 24 goals for the season and along with Knippel and Andersson give Wheeling a few different options on their offensive attack. Austin Hall added another strong day in net, finishing with 12 saves on 25 shots faced throughout the afternoon for a .480 save percentage.

The Cardinals now sit 2-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play as they head into their second to last non-conference showing of the season. The Cardinals are one of three teams that started conference play at 0-1 while two teams remained idle in conference play. Wheeling is looking to get back on track in this non-conference battle before diving headfirst back into GMAC play this weekend. Wheeling's offense has led the charge, averaging 13.8 goals per game and looks to spearhead the Cardinals this time once again out.

The Matchup

The Cardinals and Bobcats are meeting for just the second time in program history, with Frostburg State leading the all-time series at 1-0. This will be the first meeting between the two teams in Wheeling, West Virginia, with last year's series opener being played in Frostburg, Maryland. Wheeling scored six goals in that opening matchup and are looking for even more offensive success in the second meeting, and first on their home field.

In their first game, Frostburg State would come away with an 18-6 victory in a game that saw the Bobcats jump out in front early. Wheeling would be led by Jake Wodarek, who finished with two goals and two assists, while scoring a team-high four points in the game. Mike Andersson also added two goals on the day while Brody Fawver and Dakota Strong each added goals in the loss. Joshua Wolford would get the start in net, making 13 saves on 30 shots faced in the loss.
