Wheeling Baseball Releases 2024 Schedule

Wheeling, W. Va. – The holidays are here and before you know it, spring will have sprung in the Ohio Valley. In preparation, the Wheeling University Baseball team is preparing with the release of their 2024 season schedule on Friday. It is the second consecutive season where the Cardinals will get to play a full 50-game slate as they try to battle back to the 2024 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Tournament.

During the 2023 season, the Cardinals found themselves back in the conference tournament for the second time in the past three years, after missing the tournament during the 2022 season. They used a strong start in non-conference play to get them going and entered MEC play with a record of 9-4. As they began the MEC schedule, the Cardinals had their shares of ups and downs, but were able to battle back. They ended up winning five of their last six games as they clinched the #2 seed out of the MEC North Division. They would fall to Concord in the first round, before earning their first ever MEC Tournament win in the elimination game when they took down West Liberty 5-3. Their season ended as they fell to Charleston in the MEC semifinal game, dropping the affair 16-1.

As they begin 2023, the Cardinals once again start with a challenging non-conference schedule. They kick things off with regional play against CAL-U with a three-game set, and then take on Dillard University as they move down to New Orleans, LA. After battling Bluefield State in a three-game set, they begin their spring trip as they head down to Wilson, North Carolina. During that run, they will face Clarion and Glenville State in non-conference action before beginning their MEC slate. After playing their first 17 games on the road, the Cardinals kick-off conference play with a home weekend. They host Charleston on March 16th and West Virginia State on March 17th as they open up the J.B. Chambers I-470 complex.

As they continue through March, the Cardinals continue their heavy road slate as they hit the road for the following weekend. However, once the calendar turns to April, the Cardinals make up for some of those road games with a heavy home slate. During the month, they have weekend series against Frostburg State, Salem, and West Liberty while also hosting regional opponents IUP and Clarion during the month. The Cardinals were 10-5 in home games last season and, with so many home games at the end of the year, they look to use that to their advantage. The final weekend will feature the Cardinals at home against West Liberty on May 3rd before ending the season at West Liberty for a doubleheader on May 5th. The 2024 MEC Tournament will once again be played in Charleston, West Virginia as the Cardinals try to make it back.

Despite losing several players to graduation a year ago, the Cardinals return to 2024 with most of their core in tact. On the mound, the team will see the return of their three top starters from 2023 in Lenny Jinks, Kody McCarley, and Dominic Parker-McDonald. Also returning will be the Cardinal's main closer in Hunter Dyck as he looks to build off of his five saves from a season ago. The Cardinals as a staff put up a team ERA of 6.20 and a WHIP of 1.69 and will look to be even stronger this season. On the offensive side, the Cardinals will once again be led by Braden Killens, who set the single-season record in both home runs and RBI a season ago. Joining him atop the lineup will be Christian Boyles, who hit .323 out of the leadoff spot, and Spencer Craig, who was fourth on the team with 24 RBI, while hitting a career-best .292.

The Wheeling University Baseball team will kick-off the 2024 season on Friday, February 16th, when they take on CAL-U with first pitch at 1 PM.
