Wheeling, W. Va. – On day one, many of the field athletes got the chance to compete in their events and shined to kick off the High Point Verteklasse. However, on day two, it was the Wheeling Women's Track & Field track athletes that shined bright. A school record fell and the team racked up several PR's on the day as they continue to battle through their outdoor schedule with their sites set on the 2022 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Outdoor Championships in May.
The leader of the day was senior
Caroline Fodor, who competed in just one event on day two, but made the most of it. She ran in the Women's 800-Meter and broke the Wheeling University School Record running a 2:15.14. Overall, she finished sixth overall on the field and was just four seconds off the leaders pace as she wrote her name in the Cardinals record books. She beat the old school record, which was held by former Cardinal Sarah Campanelli in 2010, but more than a full second. It was a big accomplishment for the senior in her final season of competition, and she began her outdoor season with a bang competing in both the 1500 and 800 meter events in her first outdoor event of the season.
While the day finished with a big performance on the track, the track athletes kicked things off as well in the 100-M Dash. Kaniyah McGowan was the line competitor for the Cardinals and set a new PR with a time of 12.52 seconds. McGowan's day was not done yet as she was right back at it in the 200-Meter, where she once again set a PR with a time of 25.86 seconds, entering the top 10 all-time at Wheeling. As the day continued, Wheeling had two runners in the 400-Meter Hurdles with
Keala McCurry and
Jenay Soumahro running. Soumahro would lead the way, winning the B Finals, with a time of 1:05.41 and McCurry finished two spots behind her in third at 1:07.80. The individual track events ended with the 100-Meter Hurdles with two more athletes competing.
Isha Sesay led the way, finishing ninth at 14.96 while
Tara Perry set a new PR finishing 13th at 15.81 seconds.
While there were no field events on the day, the Women's 4x400-Meter relay team got their first run in of the season. The team consisted of Kaniyah McGowan, Susan Trammel,
Jenay Soumahro, and
Caroline Fodor. All four had set PR's already on the day and were looking to finish their day off strong. They finished sixth overall at the event, but made their way into the record books finishing eighth in team history. They ran the event in 4:04.63, finishing the day on a high note as they continue their outdoor season.
The Wheeling University Women's track and field team is back in action on Friday April 8th, when they head to the IUP Ed Fry Invitational.
