Wheeling Drops Pair in Finale vs. Fairmont State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Fairmont, W. Va. – After a late night of action on Sunday, the Wheeling University Baseball team (12-19, 8-8) was back in action Monday afternoon for their finale against Fairmont State. They fell in game one 6-2 before dropping the finale 12-4 to fall to 1-3 against the Falcons for the weekend. They return home Tuesday for a return to non-conference play against Clarion as they look for a bounce-back.

Game One: Fairmont State 6, Wheeling 2

In the first game of the day, Fairmont State jumped out to an early lead and rode it to a 6-2 victory that Wheeling couldn't battle back from. After getting another strong pitching performance from Hayden Scudder on Sunday night, the Cardinals were looking for another strong performance from their starters on day two. The Cardinals kept things close through the first few innings by scoring both their runs in the middle of the game. However, a pair of late runs from Fairmont State was enough to seal the deal and give Fairmont State the win in the first game of the doubleheader. The Cardinals tried to rally in the top of the seventh, but didn't have enough offense left to tie the game and looked for a bounce back in game two.

With the game one loss, the Cardinals fell to 1-2 in MEC North Division Play as they start off a stretch or four straight weekends against MEC North opponents. They entered game two with a chance to earn the split against the Falcons and set them up in a good spot as they return home on Friday and Saturday against the Division leaving Frostburg State. The Cardinals would call on Paul Trip in the final game as they looked to score early and give Tripi some run support to work with the rest of the way.

Game Two: Fairmont State 12, Wheeling 4

The Cardinals came back in game two looking to bounce back and earn the split of the day. However, it was the Falcons who would once again score first in the game and left Wheeling playing from behind for just the second time in the series. The Cardinals had the lead in each of the first two games of the series, but were forced to play from behind again. Before all was said and done, it was Fairmont State that would end up holding on and winning by the final score of 12-4. It moved Wheeling to 1-3 on the weekend and brought their MEC record back to even at 8-8 through the first 16 conference games of the season. Wheeling had had their share of ups and downs throughout the season to this point, and they are hoping that a stretch of home games can bring their fortune back.

They will return home on Tuesday to take on Atlantic Regional opponent Clarion in a single nine-inning game. It will be their first nine inning game since back on March 5th when they took on Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent Mercyhurst. Then, they open up a weekend set with the division leaders Frostburg State. A lot of things can change after a strong weekend and the Cardinals hope they can tap into some of that magic on their home field.

The Wheeling University Baseball team is back in action on Tuesday, April 12th, when they take on Clarion in one nine-inning game with first pitch scheduled for 3 PM.
