Box Score Salem, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Baseball team (3-9, 0-0) wrapped up their weekend in Salem, West Virginia when they battled Mercyhurst on Sunday. Unfortunately, they couldn't complete the weekend sweep as they fell to Mercyhurst 19-3 to end their trip. The Cardinals are now 3-9 overall and have one more non-conference series ahead of them before the start of Mountain East Conference (MEC) play.
It was the most runs that the Cardinals have given up in a single game this season, as the regionally-ranked Lakers brought them all they could handle. The Cardinals responded with three runs of their own, as the offense could not duplicate their performances from the other two days. In total, the Cardinals had a strong weekend scoring a combined 39 runs in the three-game set, and finished the weekend 2-1. It was a good showing for the team as all three of their opponents were regional games. The goal still remains for making the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament at the end of May, and wins against Regional opponents will go a long way towards helping them reach their goal.
However, while the offense had a strong week, the Cardinals were also tagged for a combined 35 runs over the weekend. They ended up outscoring their opponents 36-35, with the outlier being Sunday's game. The Cardinals have one more Regional series remaining against Indiana University of Pennsylvania before they get into the heart of their MEC schedule. They have already seen one conference opponent this past weekend and earned a big win, but they still have a long road to go if they want to repeat as MEC North Division Champions. Head Coach
Ryan Lewicki purposefully put in a rigorous schedule for his guys in hopes that the tough competition would pay off down the stretch.
The Wheeling University Baseball team returns to action on Saturday, March 12th, when they hit the road to face IUP with first pitch at noon.
