Box Score Salem, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Baseball team (2-8, 0-0) opened their weekend in Salem, West Virginia on Friday night when they took on Alderson Broaddus. It was their first taste of a Mountain East Conference (MEC) opponent, even though it was a non-conference game, and Wheeling answered the call. They picked up a 20-10 win for their first regional win of the season as they moved to 2-8 in non-conference play.
It was the highest offensive output of the season this far for the baseball team, as several of Wheeling's top performers were involved. The Cardinal's previous high for runs in a game this season was 10 runs in game two of the series against Chowan. The Cardinals offense has been one of their strong suits this season as guys like
Chris Iazzetta,
Jacob Murray, and
Riley Cameron have all had breakout series so far this season. However, after a series sweep at the hands of Cal-U, Wheeling is looking to use this strong performance from their lineup as a building block that they can use to help them build towards MEC play, which kicks off on March 19th against Concord, one of the teams that eliminated Wheeling in the playoffs last season.
As far as the pitching staff goes, the Cardinals would allow 10 runs but were bailed out by the offensive attack. It was the third time this season that the Cardinals' pitching staff has allowed 10 runs in a game. Wheeling has fallen twice in the previous two games but picked up a win this time around. The Cardinals' pitching staff has seen strong performances from guys like
Johendry Colmenares and
Logan Pillars as they continue to try and establish their 1-2 punch at starting pitcher. Along with Pillars and Colmenares, Wheeling has also seen
Pete Toula make a few starts, and all have had their ups and downs. They continue to battle for their spots with conference play kicking off in just 15 days.
The Wheeling University Baseball team returns to action on Saturday when they take on the host Salem with first pitch scheduled for 12:30 pm.
