Wheeling Women’s Golf Coach Sue Vail Named MEC Women’s Golf Coach of the Year

Bridgeport, W. Va. - Late Tuesday night, the Mountain East Conference (MEC) released their annual Men's and Women's Golf postseason awards following the 2022 MEC Spring Classic. After the All-MEC teams were named, the conference presented awards for the Men's and Women's Golf Coaches of the Year. Wheeling University Head Women's Golf Coach Sue Vail won the award on the Women's side as the MEC Women's Golf Coach of the Year.

Vail is in her 17th season at the helm of the Wheeling Women's Golf team and helped them bring home their third Mountain East Conference (MEC) Championship in program history. It was their first MEC Championship since the 2015 season as they won the event by 15 strokes over Glenville State. Under Vail's watch, the team saw all five of their golfers improve throughout the season and at one point or another, they all shot at least in the mid-80s.

Under Vail's watch, she has helped lead Wheeling to seven conference championships between the MEC and the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) and has won three WVIAC Coach of the Year Awards. However, this marks her first MEC Coach of the Year Award as she helped the team take home their third MEC Championship.

Vail gives all the credit to her players, saying that they are the ones that help the team grow and allow awards like this to be handed out.

"Being coach of the year is only half for the coach and the other half is for the players," said Vail. "I believe this is called a TEAM. I could not have asked for better players throughout the years and especially this year. We are truly a family within our Wheeling University community, and I am blessed."

Vail's Wheeling University Women's Golf team returns to the course on Monday, April 4th, when they head to the NC4K Classic hosted by Ohio Dominican University.
