Wheeling, W. Va. - With bitter cold temperatures around the area, the Wheeling University Men's Golf team wrapped up the MEC Spring Classic on Tuesday. After finishing the first day in a tie for seventh, the men slipped to eighth in the field beating out two other teams in the tournament. It was a big day for many of Wheeling's young golfers as three of the five players improved their scores from the first round and every Cardinal finished under the 90-stroke mark.
Sophomore Yadhu Urs put together his best mark of the spring so far, finishing the day with a score of 73 putting him just three over par for the course. He cracked the top 10 for the first time this spring season, tying for sixth in the field, and improved his placement from the 2022 Fall MEC Championships by three spots. Urs started the day on the back nine, and shot par on his first three holes before hitting a birdie on hole 13 that put him one under par. He would stay there for the next three holes before a bogey on hole 17 put him back at one over. He would end the back nine there, and had similar success on the front nine, shooting a +2 to bring his total to +3 on the day.
Hunter Travis finished behind him, shooting an 83 on day two to finish his tournament tied for 40th shooting a 165. Travis finished the day with eight pars on his list and shot just one stroke worse than his day one score. The biggest improvement for the Cardinals came from Austin Panhorst, who lowered his score by seven strokes from day one to day two. He led Wheeling with three birdies on the day while notching five pars to finish tied for 43rd in the field and has some momentum heading into the team's final spring event of the season.
A pair of freshman rounded out Wheeling's roster with Blake Ring-Fish and Alex Parker finishing fourth and fifth on the team respectively. Ring-Fish shot an 87 on day two of the event, picking up three pars and a birdie on the day. Alex Parker put up his best single round score of the spring to round out the ticket, shooting an 85 to drop five strokes from his day one effort. He had success on the front nine, shooting a +6 and it was enough to help him stay in the 80's in the round. It was a huge step forward for a young team as they look to build on it for their final event of the spring.
The Wheeling University Men's Golf team is back in action on Monday, April 4th, when they head to the West Liberty Invitational to round out their season.
