Rebounds Lead Day Two as Men’s Golf Takes Ninth at Cecil C. Spadafora Invitational

Indiana, PA. – Day 1 of the Cecil C. Spadafora Invitational saw the Wheeling University Men's Golf team sitting ninth in the standings after 18 holes. All though they couldn't move up on the leaderboard, the final 18 holes were played Wednesday on a day that was dictated by Cardinal rebounds. Three of the five Cardinal golfers either equalled or bettered their day one scores, as the team shot a 309 to round out the effort.

The biggest bounce back of the day came from graduate student Sean Dobson, who took five strokes off his day one score to shoot 74 (+3) over the final 18 holes. He would get his day started on the #9 hole and shot par before taking the turn. He kept the success going with three straight pars to start the back nine, before knocking a stroke off his score with his first birdie coming on hole 13. He would end up going back over par adding two strokes on the next two holes, but he battled back over the next three holes. He would par on both 16 and 17, before ending the back nine with a birdie to get his score back to even. He would keep it right there through the first two holes of the front nine, but added three strokes to his score over the final six holes. He finished the day at 74 (+3), jumping 17 spots in the standings to finish 32nd overall in the field.

Leading the effort for the Cardinals was sophomore Zak Collins, who took third in the field, equaling his day one score of 72 (+1). He would start his day on hole eight and hit par on back-to-back holes. He started the back nine with a bang, hitting birdie on hole 10. He would end up being the most successful Cardinal on the back nine, hitting each of his two birdies over the final nine holes, while hitting par six times. As he hit the turn, Collins shot 34 (-1) on the back nine and was sitting under par as he approached his final seven holes. However, he added two strokes to his score on the first four of those holes, before finishing strong with three pars to round out the day. It was the second straight top 10 finish for the sophomore and his highest finish of the spring season so far.

Rounding out the scoring portion of the event was Troy Loughry and Federico Cobos Kallmann. Kallmann was the final Cardinal to either beat or equal their day one score, shooting 83 (+12) over the final 18 holes. His best performance would come on the front nine, where he picked up his lone birdie of the round on hole one. He would shoot (+4) over those first nine holes, and added a +8 on the back nine to round out the day. He would finish tied for 69th in the field, shooting 157 (+24). Loughry rounded out the scoring portion of the event, shooting an 80 (+9) over the final 18 holes. The graduate student would hit one birdie on the day, picking it up on hole 18 as he finished the two days of competition at 157 (+15) to finish 48th in the field.

Rounding out the second day of competition was Luke Wennberg, who finished tied for 69th with a two day score of 166 (+24). He would have an impressive showing on the back nine, shooting +1 over those nine holes, including his only birdie of the day. Rounding out the individual portion of the event was Elias Ekenes-Fosback, who finished his event shooting a 77 (+5) and jumped to 40th in the field. He would equal Collins's performance on the back nine, shooting a 34 (-1) but rounded out his day shooting  +7 on the front nine.

The Wheeling University Men's Gold team returns to action on Monday, April 20th, when they compete at the Pitt-Johnstown Invitational.
