Men’s Golf Seventh After Day One of MEC Spring Classic

Charleston, W. Va. – The Men's Golf team began competing against the Mountain East Conference's (MEC) best of the best in round one of the MEC Spring Classic. All five Cardinals have wrapped up the first 18 holes of play and Wheeling sits in seventh place in the standings. They have shown improvement from their spring outing of the season as almost everyone has lowered their scores.

Day one was once again led by sophomore Yadhu Urs, who posted his fourth sub-80s score of the spring finishing 13th in the field with a score of 77. Urs began the day on the front nine and shot one over par on the first hole. He picked up one birdie n the front nine to drop his score to +2 for the round. He finished at +4 and headed to the back nine looking to drop his score. On the back nine, Urs improved his game by shooting six pars on the nine holes and shot one over par on the rest of the holes to finish +3 in the round. He currently sits tied for 13th in the field with 18 more holes to go during day two of the event.

Hunter Travis was second on the list for the Cardinals and shot under 85 for the second event in a row.  He led Wheeling with three birdies on the day, two of those coming in the back nine as he worked his way back into the field. He shot +8 on the front nine and the +4 on the back nine was enough to get him into the top 40 of the event. Blake Ring-Fish also had a nice bounce-back round as he shot an 84 through the first 18 holes. He finished with six pars on the day and was under the 85 point mark for the first time this spring. The final Cardinal to shoot under 90 on the day was Austin Panhorst who finished the first day with an 87, finishing with four pars on the day.

The second day of the MEC Spring Classic will feature the same 18 holes as the Cardinals try to lower their scores. They sit 26 strokes behind first place Charleston, who scored 304 on the day. They are currently tied with Concord and are just 10 strokes away from getting into the top five of the event.
