Wheeling, W. Va. - On Monday, the Wheeling University Baseball announced an update to its upcoming three-game series against California University of PA (CAL-U). The opener, which was originally scheduled for Friday, February 25th, has now been moved to Wednesday, February 23rd, with first pitch scheduled for 1 PM. As of now, the games on Saturday, February 26th, and Sunday, February 27th, will remain the same but are subject to change due to weather.
Last week, the Cardinals had a week off after back-to-back trips that saw them go 1-5 in their first six games. The Cardinals started out the year against three of the top teams in Division II Baseball in the Sunshine State Conference and went 0-3 on that opening weekend. They followed that up with a trip to Murfreesboro, North Carolina, where they played a three-game series against Chowan, dropping two of those three contests.
Offense has been on fire over the first six games of the year, led by junior Jacob Murray. Murray is the reigning Mountain East Conference (MEC) Player of the Week from a week ago and had a big showing against Chowan. The junior hit .416 with a home run and two RBI in the three-game series. His biggest performance came in the second game of that series when he went 3-5 with a home run and two RBI. His big hit came on a solo home run to right that made it a three-run game and eventually led Wheeling to their 10-9 win over Chowan.
The Wheeling University Baseball team has two more stretches of non-conference action before the start of Mountain East Conference (MEC) play on March 19th. They begin with their first in-region games of the season against Cal-U and follow it up with three more regional games in Salem, West Virginia. They will face Salem, Alderson Broaddus, and Mercyhurst in Salem. Their first home game will be on Sunday, March 13th, when they play Indiana University of Pennsylvania before their conference opener the next week against Concord.
The Wheeling University Baseball team will kick off their three-game set with Cal-U on Wednesday with first pitch at 1 PM at Wild Things Park.
