Wheeling Baseball Releases 2023 Schedule on Road Back to MEC Playoffs

Wheeling, W. Va. - It is officially crossover season on the campus of Wheeling University as fall sports begin to transition into winter sports. However, before you know it, spring will be here, and the Wheeling University Baseball team is preparing with the release of their 2023 spring schedule on Friday. The 50-game schedule will see Wheeling go out on the road a ton with only 17 games, including six doubleheaders, being held at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Complex.

Last season, the Cardinals finished at 22-27 overall and 18-14 in MEC play to finish fourth overall in the MEC North Division. The Cardinals started the year with battles against the Sunshine State Conference (SSC), which is one of the top conferences in the state of Florida. Once they got to MEC play, the Cardinals dealt with an MEC North Division that was greatly improved from previous seasons. It came down to the final doubleheader of the year, but Notre Dame College just edged Wheeling for the final playoff spot. The Cardinals did end their season on a high note, taking three of four games from their rival West Liberty, and now they look to get back to the MEC Tournament in 2023.

The Cardinals will once again open the season in non-conference action, heading down to the Shipyard at Charleston in South Carolina for a three-day tournament against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponents. They open with Kentucky Wesleyan on February 10th and follow that with back-to-back games against Millersville. Their next tournament takes them to California, Pennsylvania, where they will again see PSAC competition. They battle Lock Haven University, Lake Erie College, and Cal-U on February 18th and 19th to close out the month of February.

As March begins, the Cardinals make another trip down south when they head to North Carolina for a pair of three-game series. They open with Carolina University on March 3rd and 4th and follow up with a three-game set with Mid-Atlantic Christian University on March 5th and 6th. Their final non-conference series to start the year comes the next weekend when they head to Salem University March 10th and 11th in their final tune-up for Mountain East Conference (MEC) play. They open their conference slate on the road with doubleheaders against Charleston and West Virginia State before returning home for their home opener on March 26th against West Virginia Wesleyan. One more doubleheader against Davis & Elkins on March 27th closes out the month as the Cardinals finally get to play on their home field.

Of the Cardinals 17 home games, 13 of them come during the month of April, with the Cardinals ending the year on their home field. April begins with two road doubleheaders at Concord and Glenville State, before the Cardinals come home April 4th to take on Walsh in non-conference action. It is a quick turnaround as the Cardinals host Notre Dame College in a four-game series the following weekend, beginning their MEC North schedule. After a week on the road against Clarion and Frostburg State, Wheeling comes back home April 18th to host IUP and April 22nd and 23rd to host Fairmont State. They host one more home non-conference game against Seton Hill before hitting the road for a four-game set at Alderson Broaddus. The season ends with the split home & home doubleheader on May 5th and May 7th when the team battles West Liberty.
