AUSTIN, Texas (Aug. 10) - Recent Wheeling University graduate
Danielle Stewart (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) became the first-ever two-time College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American in school history Wednesday afternoon.
Stewart, who was a Third-Team CoSIDA Academic All-American last year, was named Second-Team Academic All-America announced the organization. She remains the only track & field athlete from Wheeling to ever receive the distinction – considered to be the most prestigious academic award in collegiate athletics. In addition to being the first-ever two-time honoree, Stewart is also one of eight student-athletes in Wheeling University history to be voted an Academic All-American by the organization.
Stewart established an NCAA Provo Mark of 3.92 meters (12'10.25) in the pole vault to rank 27th in Division II this season. Stewart, who earned NCAA Indoor All-America honors in the pole vault in 2020, ended her career as a four-time MEC Champion in the pole vault, a four-time USTFCCCA All-Region honoree and a three-time USTFCCCA All-Academic selection.
In the classroom, Stewart recently graduated with a 3.89 GPA as a dual major in both nursing and exercise science.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative 3.30 GPA or higher, must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and must have been a first-team selection in their district. Nominees must also have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games and must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America teams include student-athletes from all eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
Stewart was the only Women's Track & Field athlete from a MEC institution to earn the honor and one of three total athletes. Jack Mastandrea of Charleston (Second Team) and Jason Weitzel of Concord (Third Team) earned honors on the men's side.
