Dominguez voted CoSIDA Academic All-America

AUSTIN, Texas (July 28) - Recent Wheeling University graduate Luis Dominguez (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) was named a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Baseball Third-Team Academic All-American announced the organization Wednesday afternoon.

Dominguez is the first Wheeling baseball player to ever receive the distinction – considered to be the most prestigious academic award in collegiate athletics. Dominguez is also just the eighth student-athlete in Wheeling University history to be tabbed an Academic All-American.

Dominguez was a unanimous First-Team All-Atlantic Region selection (D2CCA, NCBWA, & ABCA) at third base and a First-Team All-Mountain East Conference (MEC) honoree. He ranked second in the MEC and 39th in Division II with a .412 batting average, second in MEC and 30th nationally with a .520 on-base percentage, and seventh in the MEC with 39 runs scored to establish a new Wheeling record.

Dominguez broke the all-time Wheeling record with a .375 batting average, breaking a record previously held by former Cardinal and MLB Draft pick Noah Mull (2007-2010). Mull hit .350 during his career with the Cardinals.

In the classroom, Dominguez graduated with his degree in Exercise Science while carrying a 3.76 grade-point average. He was on the dean's list in three of his four semesters at Wheeling, was a two-time Spring Academic All-MEC honoree and a finalist for the MEC Scholar Athlete of the Year award.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative 3.30 GPA or higher, must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and must have been a first-team selection in their district. Nominees must also have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games and must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.

The CoSIDA Academic All-America teams include student-athletes from all eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.

Dominguez was one of two Academic All-American baseball selections from the MEC. Concord's Anthony Stehlin earned second team honors.
