Lewicki, Cardinals announce recruiting class

WHEELING, W.Va. (Oct. 8) – Wheeling University Head Baseball Coach Ryan Lewicki announced his recruiting class and roster for the upcoming 2021 season Thursday afternoon.

These individuals have either signed national letters of intent (NLIs) or institutional letters expressing their desire to play baseball at Wheeling. This group consists of nine junior-college transfers, one NCAA Division II transfer and four high school seniors. Eight members of the class are pitchers, while a pair of catchers and four other positional players round out the class.

"Our 2020 recruitment class consists of 14 high-quality, high-character student athletes, who not only will help us continue building our baseball program, but will represent our university at the highest level," said Lewicki, who will enter his third season at the helm. "With this class we wanted to add more experience, maturity, college playing experience and that toughness you look for in ball players and these young men covered those areas."

"The expectation within our program is at an all-time high and these young men will help us continue to exceed our goals and help us bring a championship to Wheeling."

He is a max-effort arm that every time he takes the rubber, you know you're getting everything he has. Good fastball to mix pitcher that will only get more confident and comfortable in our rotation in time. Malkolm will be in consideration for a top-four spot in the rotation and also in a relief role. We are excited to have him here at Wheeling."

He will be a middle of the order guy for us and has a work ethic that you can't teach. Riley will work as a catcher/first baseman and is someone who can have a stellar career here at Wheeling."

Left handed bat with bat speed and tons of ability and pop, will just need a good fall & spring in the weight room to see those areas improve even more. Solid academically, tough work ethic & will be a grinder in this program for years to come."

LEWICKI ON LENTZ: "At 6-foot-4 and being a two way at first base and relief pitching, the ceiling for Jacob is high. He is very raw and will need to also hit the weight room hard this year and work to put on good weight over the next 5-6 months. He is the definition of a team first ball player and fits the mold of what we want our baseball players to be here at Wheeling."

He works his butt off in the weight room, at practice and is a competitor on the mound when he is live. We love the passion he shows and if he can just get some more innings and reps for us this fall, he can be in really good shape for the spring. Good student and even better teammate!"

He will need a solid year in the weight room to add size and weight, but competes his tail off in the weight room. Cody fits the type of person we want in our program and we are lucky to have him here at Wheeling."

LEWICKI ON NAIDA: "Jared is a left-handed pitcher with not only seven-plus starts in his previous season, but only three earned runs in 40 innings of work. The experience speaks for itself and the guy competes every time he is on the mound. His ball has a lot of movement and as long as he can command his pitches and pitch with a purpose, Jared will have a bright future in our program."

Jackson Ogozalek | Pitcher | Canal Fulton, Ohio | Northwest HS
HIGH SCHOOL

He is very young and very raw in many facets but has so much room for potential and growth in our program. Fastball has some life to it and needs to find the command for his other pitches to just make him more complete on the mound. Exceptional young man and very excited to have him here at Wheeling."

Connor Pinsker | Pitcher | Highland, Ill. | Highland HS | Lewis & Clark C.C.

LEWICKI ON PINSKER: "Connor is another left-handed pitcher with starting experience in a region that was very challenging in junior college baseball. Crafty lefty that does not throw anything straight and just competes every time he is on the bump. He will be a guy that will either be a weekend starter for us in the spring or could be first out of the pen type of guy. Connor is a really good teammate and we have really enjoy our time so far with him."

PERSONAL
Son of Mark and Kristie Scudder … Sibling - Daylee Scudder

LEWICKI ON SCUDDER: "Hayden is also a left-handed pitcher that worked mostly out of the bullpen while at Roane State. He is probably one of the calmest pitchers I have ever coached. He does not show emotion and just stays cool and continues to pitch under any pressure while on the mound. He controls the running game really well and just pounds the strike zone. Exception student and an even better person and we are lucky to have him here at Wheeling."

Pete Toula | Middle Infielder | Sagamore Hills, Ohio | Nordonia HS | Mercyhurst North East

PERSONAL
Son of John Toula and Karen Ollie Toula … Sibling – Sarah … Dad played basketball at Cleveland State  … Played for Midwest Ironbirds

LEWICKI ON TOULA: "Pete is a utility player who could see time at shortstop, second base, third and the outfield. He is extremely talented defensively and has plus hands in the infield. Offensively, has really good bat speed and barrels balls well, just needs to find that consistency at the plate and you will see his name in a lineup for us one day. Pete shows up early to everything and is an example of what a teammate and Cardinal baseball player should look like and act."

Paul Tripi | Pitcher/Outfielder | Cheektowaga, N.Y. | Maryvale HS | Jamestown C.C.
PRIOR TO WHEELING
Played one year at Jamestown Community College under coach Jordan Basile … First-Team All-WNYAC 2019 … Dean's List

PERSONAL
Son of Paul and Angela Tripi … Siblings - Maria and Savino Tripi

LEWICKI ON TRIPI: "Paul is a two-way player for us that puts his emphasis on the mound and in the outfield. He is a left-handed pitcher and swings it from the left side which are both big advantages in our mind. He can play any of the three positions in the outfield and with pitching will probably be a reliever for us out of the pen. Hard working, goal driven, tough nosed young man who can play a big part for our program this year and for years to come."

Josh Wessler | Pitcher | Cincinnati, Ohio | La Salle HS | Urbana University
PRIOR TO WHEELING

PERSONAL
Parents - Rich and Becky Wessler … Sibling – Jake … Brother, Jake, played football at Thomas More for four years

LEWICKI ON WESSLER: "Josh was a relief arm for Urbana in the shortened season and will continue in that role for us in the upcoming spring. He has a ¾ arm action that allows his baseball to run with a lot of movement and spin. Find that zone consistently and being able to mix his pitches are the factors that he will need to continue to develop and master. One of the best GPA of all the transfers in this class and fits the culture and mission of what we want our baseball players to be."

Hayden Wilcox | Pitcher | Victoria, British Columbia, Canada | Lambrick Park Secondary | Dodge City C.C.
PRIOR TO WHEELING
Played two seasons at Dodge City Community College under coach Phil Stephenson

HIGH SCHOOL
Played at Lambrick Park Secondary School under coach Charlie Strandlund ... Named to team British Colombia at Tournament 12 – 2017 ... basketball … Graduated with academic honours

PERSONAL
Son of Brian Wilcox and Krista Gunnarsen … Sibling - Anna Wilcox … Played for Victoria Eagles

LEWICKI ON WILCOX: "At 6-foot-6 Hayden is a right-hander that spent time both as a starter and pen guy for Dodge City. He is a long arm that gets over the top with really good fastball command and has been nothing short of lights out so far this fall. He will be competing for one of the starting spots in our weekend rotation and has busted it in the weight room and classroom. Phenomenal student athlete and an even better team guy for us."
