No. 15 Volleyball knocks off Charleston, 3-0

WHEELING, W.Va. (Nov. 5) – The No. 15 Wheeling University volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep against Charleston Tuesday evening inside the McDonough Center in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest. The match was also the regular-season home-finale.

TEAM LEADERS
  • Junior Breanna Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) led the team with 11 kills. She also chipped in eight digs and a trio of service aces and solo blocks in the win.
  • Junior Cassie Meyer (Jackson Center, Ohio/Jackson Center) registered a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Earlier in the day she was named the MEC Offensive Player of the Week.
  • Senior Haley Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) hit at a .600-clip for the match with seven kills on only 10 attacks with one error.
  • Senior Stephanie Sylvester (Oregon, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) dished out 33 assists on offense and helped the team achieve a hitting percentage of .353.
  • Junior Audrey Francis (Sidney, Ohio/Fairlawn) posted 13 digs to lead the defense. She was named the MEC Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wheeling notched the first five points of the game and raced out to an 11-4 lead before Charleston took a timeout to try to slow down momentum.
  • The Cardinals allowed a point after the timeout, but recorded the next six to take a 17-5 lead and force a second UC timeout. Wheeling eventually went on to win the set at 25-13.
  • The Golden Eagles hung with the Cardinals early in the second set and were tied at 10-10.
  • Wheeling claimed eight of the next 11 points, including six-straight, to take an 18-13 lead. The Cardinals followed that spurt with seven-straight points to claim a 25-13 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Wheeling established leads of 6-1, 15-8 and 20-12, before closing out the night with a 25-18 win in the third set to clinch the sweep.

  • The Cardinals are on the road for each of their final four regular-season games.
  • Wheeling will take on Urbana (15-9, 10-1 MEC) on Saturday, November 9 at 1 p.m.
