No. 17 Volleyball dispatches Fairmont State, 3-0

WHEELING, W.Va. (Nov. 1) – The No. 17 Wheeling University volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win over Fairmont State Friday evening in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match.

TEAM LEADERS
  • Junior Cassie Meyer (Jackson Center, Ohio/Jackson Center) led the team in kills for the third-straight match.
  • She established a new season-high with 21 kills on 31 attacks with only two errors. Her .613 hitting percentage was also a season-best.
  • Meyer also led the team on defense with 16 digs to collect the kill-dig double-double.
  • Senior Stephanie Sylvester (Oregon, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) guided the offense with 51 assists to establish a new season-high in a three-set match.
  • Junior Breanna Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) finished with a kill-dig double-double of her own and matched a season-high with 17 kills (341 hitting percentage) and 11 digs.
  • The Cardinals finished with their second-highest hitting percentage in a match this season at .383, second only to a .438 mark when the team swept West Liberty in late September.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals set the tone early with leads of 12-6 and 16-8, before closing out the first set at 25-16.
  • Wheeling converted for 18 kills on just 33 attacks with three errors (.455 hitting percentage) in the first set win.
  • The Falcons played the second set much tighter with the Cardinals and trailed 14-12 to force a Wheeling timeout.
  • The Cardinals re-established a five point lead at 20-15 with the help of a trio of kills by Meyer and were on the brink of a two-game lead after a Sylvester kill made the score 24-19.
  • Fairmont State managed to score three-straight points to make things interesting, but a kill by Breanna Kramer helped secure a 25-22 win and a 2-0 advantage.
  • Wheeling established a 10-7 lead to open the third set, but a trio of Falcon points tied up the set and forced a Cardinal timeout.
  • The Cards took command of the set with 12 of the next 17 points to race out to a 22-15 lead. 
  • Fairmont State drew back within five points at 22-17 and 24-19, before a Breanna Kramer kill secured the match for Wheeling

  • Wheeling has a quick turnaround and will play again tomorrow, Saturday, November 2 inside the McDonough Center against Frostburg State at 1 p.m.
  • The Cardinals defeated the Bobcats in three sets earlier this season.
